Go to page 78-79 and you'll see the Sportsman rules. They're listed alphabetically, so you can go right to your ET breakdown and then to "Helmet". You'll see SN95 (Snell 95) or newer is required. Helmet ratings come out every 5 years, and are good for 12 years, generally speaking. Also, NHRA rules don't accept SN95 anymore, in case you go to an NHRA track, like Norwalk or National Trail on occasion. They want 2000 and newer. M rated helmets work, though they are designed differently than the SA helmets. You can get a lot of info on helmets at http://www.smf.org/ . Personally, I believe if you have a 5 cent head, get a cheap helmet. My head and brain are important to me, so I went with an Impact Super Sport. It's a full face helmet, fire resistant liner, wide eyeport (I wear glasses and have no problem with this helmet). I'd rather pay for the protection and never use it, than need it and wish I had.
Ok thank you I appreciate it!

I almost was going to ask you if you get off work when it rains but then I realized what you meant. I suck.

I still need to get my new ARP wheel studs in since the stock ones are too short for the Prostars. Once thats taken care of I should be ready to rock.

Shit just get the lugnuts that go through the wheel you will be fine. I got stock studs on the turd. I really should get studs though, but I think the rule is that the lugs have to thread on the length of the diameter of the stud.

The GTO offset kinda screws things up and even the long lugs leave me nervous. $25 for piece of mind is well worth it to me.

Bad info Mike ... The lugs need to be through the wheel plus at least the diameter of the stud. For Ford's with a 1/2" stud, it would need to stick through a Weld wheel by 1/2 minimum.

Whoops thanks for correcting me on that Bob.

Using that same rulebook link from a couple pages ago, pages 108-109 has a good diagram that shows how the rule works.

I was always under the impression also that the lug nut just had to thread on the diameter of the stud. "Through the wheel" is a big distinction, and the diagram helps. The site doesn't let me copy and paste, or I would have.

I'm not sure why that rule exists unless it is an artifact from some old style lug / wheel combo or something. All of the shank type lug nut are threaded the full diameter inside the shank itself and have way more engagement than the diameter of the stud anyway. None the less, it's how the rule is written.

As best I have ever seen, stock studs usually only come to about the face of a three piece Weld wheel (Draglite, ProStar, RodLite) so that's why we change to 2 1/2" or 3" long studs. FWIW, last year the tech inspector at NMRA Columbus made me prove this. I have open ended nuts with removable plastic caps on the rear, so it was easy to inspect, but it was checked (along with screw in valve stems, but that's another discussion).

On a related topic, I am still trying to find a set of the lug nuts a local guy used to make. They consist of an insert for the wheel with the washer built in (in place of the lug shank), then use a "normal" nut. Because I change rear tires so much the washers really chew my Weld's up. Those would help with that, but it seems he vanished.

I hear you Bob. Both sets of my Draglites are chewed up at the lug holes by the washers, changing tires every race day. I believe it's Jerry Nether, J&J Products who made/makes what you're talking about? I am pretty sure that's where Mike Egan got his. Super slick, yet real simple. I'll check with him to see, and let you know.

If you can find ANYTHING out it would be appreciated! In fact if anyone finds 10 of them in 1/2" ... let me know, or just buy them and I'm good for the money. There was a guy at the N Washington swap meet that had them last year and I missed them, then he wasnt back in the spring (hoping for him to be back in a few weeks).

They used to hand out flyers when you came into Keystone I'm going to say in the late 80's ish ... I thought Cavalier coach used to sell them, I found his patent on line, and was told he used to run ads in the back of National Dragster but can't seem to put my hands on them. Not sure if he gave up on them or what.

A guy on SVTperformance has a used one, after some thought I'm not going to race it again till I get the FTB bushings installed... I'm sure the right side axle would be next and would do more damage than just the axle when it came apart. That guy with the black C6 Z06 busted his and it did wheel tire and suspension damage, not going to risk it.
