The IHRA rulebook is available for viewing online. Go to:
http://www.ihra.com/competition/index.php
and at the bottom of the page you'll see the rulebook link.
Go to page 78-79 and you'll see the Sportsman rules. They're listed alphabetically, so you can go right to your ET breakdown and then to "Helmet". You'll see SN95 (Snell 95) or newer is required. Helmet ratings come out every 5 years, and are good for 12 years, generally speaking. Also, NHRA rules don't accept SN95 anymore, in case you go to an NHRA track, like Norwalk or National Trail on occasion. They want 2000 and newer. M rated helmets work, though they are designed differently than the SA helmets. You can get a lot of info on helmets at
http://www.smf.org/ . Personally, I believe if you have a 5 cent head, get a cheap helmet. My head and brain are important to me, so I went with an Impact Super Sport. It's a full face helmet, fire resistant liner, wide eyeport (I wear glasses and have no problem with this helmet). I'd rather pay for the protection and never use it, than need it and wish I had.
