If you are willing to work within the package limitiations, or the combo you have fits in there, Microsquirt is a GREAT option for auto's ...
The unit runs the lastest MS II code and comes imbeded with the code. All of the "extra" features are included.
The board is factory built and tested, plus installed in a weather tight case with a real connector. This technically might be a "premium" for price, but was worth it fo me.
There is no on board MAP sensor with Microsquirt. This technically adds cost over a MS II, but I already ran a GM sensor for data logging, and do no like the MAP on the board, saw way too many issues caused by that.
You can only run high Z injectors and are limited to number. For me it was no issues becasue the EV6 injectors have killed any of the old issues with high Z, plus they are cheap these days. I'm running 4 - 80# injectors and the car idles stock.
You are also limited on coil drive options. Most things we tend to do are avaialble, but there are driver limitiations.
I have seen lots of guys go to MS in the 2.3 world, saw the success, saw the failures, and see the issues. For me, the plan was to go there because of what it could do, but to keep way from all of the bells and whistles, and some of the things I though was weakness.
For spark, my PIP signal is the trigger. Although there still is a TFI on the car, all it does is pass the PIP signal on. The squirt usies the pip like a magnetic pickup, the fires to my ignition box as a trigger. My ignition box is then wire directly to my coil, doing direct coil control. So effectively, this is an old school ignition box set up with the timing and dwell and such via the MS, bt rev limit and all from the box.
Same for fuel, Wideband, TPS, ACT, ECT, are effectively all that is used for fueling. The injector set-up with this allows me to idle 80# injectors and fuel 500+ HP as needed.
So indeed, the Microsquirt was an odd choice, but it fell right into place with what I wanted a standalone to do. The marketing of the Microsquirt started that way, and actually did first come out with some limitations that didnt make it good for cars. Now it's there, and mine is running on it :D
Did I mention I hate exhaust sytems?
Started to fix a leak at my 5 bolt flange off the turbo...
Found several other things I wanted to tidy up, then started wondering why those bolts have come loose a couple of times now. What should have been tighten a few bolts has evolved into most of the exhaust off the car ... a run to Summit for parts, and now I'm adding a big flex joint to my down pipe.
Everything is fitted back up and should be ready to bolt back together tomorrow night.
Nothing worse than working on exhaust when it's this hot and humid out.
And a little better quality of the VE live video hosted on Streetfire .. you can see the gauges and meatball a little better.

Yeah, constant battle with all that heat.
Even "worse" news I got it all back together and still had a leak :( Tore things back appart and found a crack in my header ... Small set-back ...
I dunno, mine is only a low performance version, leaves off idle, never really turn any RPM's or shift fast ... one 3" set-up is enough of a PITA for me, don't know what I would do with two of them.
Now if I could figure out why my #1 piston is always .060 in the hole ...

Mike mentioned it here ... I have hit a little setback ... while serching for the darned exhaust leak using a screwdriver along the header / block, I noticed a noise in the rotating assembly that was worth looking into ...
I needed to tear the hot side apart anyway, and found a crack in my header where #1 & #4 join in. No wonder I couldn't find it without removing it ... anyway, that is welded up and good to go.
While I was there, did a compression test ...
#4-145 #3-145# #2-135# #1-125# ... yikes, #1 and #2 a bit odd.
At that point, I took the head off. These are basically a zero deck engine, with #1 & #4 at TDC at the same time ...
Tough to see in the pictures, but #4 is at TDC and #1 is alomst .090 in the hole :(
These are what they look like when they come out ...
The good news is I found it when I did as it started to eat the rod bearing. It was likely close to putting one out the side of the block

This WAS NOT tune related by the way ... The pistons / plugs, etc are clean, and detonation really shows up in my stuff. Typically if it goes lean, it melts a piston pretty fast. I have not been into anything over 10 psi boost since the new EMS went it as I've been chasing the base tune, then damn exhasit leaks. This was likely at least wounded when it went 11.9X and 12-oh's as it has not been under boost with the new EMS and since those passes.
Two concerns I've had with this combo have been being a little injector limited with 55's, well that was corrected with the new EMS (80's) ... The other has been stock rods / bolts in the JY shortblocks ... It's pretty clear I found the limit of them :D
Nre bullet hanging on the hoist, just waiting on the new clutch to come so I can do it all from up front.
Still just a junkyard short block, just cleaned, re-sealed, and painted. I wil take 2 psi away from the thing for the rest of the year, and will need to build an H beam rod motor over the winter.
Hot damn your a lucky dog Bob!!!!!
If that were mine there would be a bay window in the side of the block!! HAHAHAH

Glad you found it when you did...and you can clearly tell there was no detenation b the tops of the pistons. good luck w/ the new build

Thanks guys ... waiting on the new clutch then I can slide the new one in.
Troy - As long as this one works out, I should be covered. Going to try and nurse this one for the year, then build a good shortblock over the winter.
It's sort of funny, when I look at those pistons the look funny, but it's just residue from the parts cleaner. This is what they look like if you rattle them (from an old engine) ...
So, Norwalk in 2 weekswith new clutch and the new JY motor?
Glad you found it when you did.

As you might imagine, Norwalk is really an issue now. I am stuck at this point waiting for the new clutch to show. As soon as it gets here, bolt it on the new JY block and slide it in. It should be running by Thursday, but then I need 4-500 easy miles of break in on the clutch (I WILL NOT shortcut that). Clutch break in is okay as I can get a lot of drive tuning done and ready to go. Of course, nothing has been touched with the high boost parts of the tune so .....
Let's just say, time is short and ticking by ... I still have not pulled the plug on Norwalk as it's still cool to hang out up there, and I could use the passes for TnT to work up on a boost tune.
Did you get yours back with the Auto yet? Tuned and ready to go?
