Agreed...and trying to get gears done on the cheap is a big gamble...spend the money the first time, and have them done right!

I think it is pretty well known that when you use Ford gears you can reuse all the shims and they are right 99% of the time. Really not rocket science, but if you have never done one before I guess it could be a bit difficult.

Yeah and I also heard that Ford started having there gears made overseas so who knows how good they are anymore.

ive done many 8.8s and never had any issues. ive always used oem or ford motorsport gears...any retard could do it

We just set mine up last night and had to move the pinion and ring gear about 10 thousandths each. Might have been better if I had the Ford gears and not the Ford Motorsport gears though I guess.

Motorsport gears are the best gears to set up. Actually they are made on the same assembly line (or what ever you wanna call it). You set your pinion depth and you backlash with a dial indicator ( you wanted between 9.5 and 13 thousandths)

Yeah, we were hoping everything would be the same since I was putting in the same ratio and they were both made by ford, but the lash was a little high and the pattern was way off. If they're made on the same line it's with different tooling because the gears were visibly different.

My old pinion was F'd though... One tooth broken completely off and every other one had a very noticeable crack on the back side. I'm lucky I didn't break them all off

for the cost of the gears/shims/oil/etc and my time to do the work....I would only use the correct tools and check the tolerances and patterns and not just slap them in and hope for the best....only thing worse than doing a job is doing it twice.

Better start checking as the last few gear sets I've had that were motorsport gear sets have measured way different. Pinion heads have not been as thick as the factory ones and as a result you need different shims.

There is a lot more to a good gear job then just swapping everything over and calling it good. I don't care what brand gears you use, if you know what you are doing, very rarely do any of them go in without some sort of adjustment.

I agree if you dont have the correct tools dont try it. Its not worth the destroyed rea or other parts. If you do want to do them yourself. Spend the money and buy the correct tools. Dave reid and I just did a 2010 GT500 two nites ago. The stock gears had gear whine up top. When we were done no noise at all. The Ford Rotunda tool is the only way to go in conjunction with a good dial indicator.
