    Diff recomendations

I have an Auburn diff and it is done. Im officially a one wheel peel guy. I know this diff isnt rebuildable and I cant go back to the stocker b/c of 31 spline axles. What have you guy used and prefer in a 31 spline diff that is rebuildable. I know I will need one I can rebuild b/c of the punishment I will be putting it through. Let me know guys

How tolerant are you of poor(er) street manners?

I am running a Detroit Locker. Not rebuildable so to speak, but also not very breakable ;) The issue is, it does some thing a little unpredicatble on the street (going along and it pops loose, or locks in), and is noisy in general operation. At the track, it's dead serious.

Ed (Ares) runs the Detroit True Trac and has been VERY happy and he launches his stuff as hard as anyone, plus it is (was?) his only daily driver. Ask Ed for details, but that is what I would have been using if this deal on the locker didn't come along. I don;t think those are as harsh as the locker.

The 31 spline 8.8 truck diff is a stout piece and can be picked up cheap.

I had a Detroit Tru-Trac in my Twin-Turbo T/A and i absolutely loved it..... the car hooked up incredibly well, even on the street, and it was taking quite a lot of punishment.....

This was going to be my suggestion, or a factory T-loc diff with the Carbon Fiber clutches ('03-04 Cobras, GT500s, new 5.0 GTs).
    I run a 35-spline locker, a bit overkill :)

Just a dissenting opinion, not sure how you drive your car no1sirbutler, but a buddy of mine bought a tru-trac and used it in his hillclimb/street/autocross notchback and it lasted under 1000 miles. This was under very abusive conditions (many parts of the roads we race on out east nearly pick one rear tire off of the ground), but I have heard the same from other road race types too. I wouldn't think it would live under drag conditions either seeing that it is a gear based diff. FWIW, he now has an Auburn pro under Sam Strano's recommendation and loves it. If it goes bad, just send it back. He is using a 31 spline. I have used a trac-lok with the carbon clutches with pretty good success too. I really think the stock diff is pretty good when you build them correctly.

I run the Tru-Trac and have had no complaints or issues. Think it was early 2008 when I put it in. Only thing it will do if you are back to far in the water box for a burnout is maybe try to do a one wheel spin. Which it will sound funky, not cluncky like a locker but different. Thats only time I ntice any noise at it works quietly. Like Bob said I do hammer the hell out of it. Most time leaving at 6200rpm but sometimes as high as 6500. Easily have 25-30k miles on mine with well over 100 passes/launches

Now early Tru-Tracs were not as strong as current ones. They were only a 2 pinion(worm gear) per side. All current ones are 3 pinion units which were built for drag racing in mind and were tested in NMRA Pure Street for an entire season in a '99 Cobra.

I second the spool. If your gonna run a Detroit might as well go with a spool. Cheaper and lighter.

I beat the shit out of the rear end of my car to be honest. I like to drop the clutch and have been know to lift the car off the ground out on back roads pushing it to its limits. Also do a lot of smoking the tires off thru turns just for shits and giggles. I believe this is why my Auburn went. I will check into the Tru-Trac and maybe see if I can locate a 8.8 out of an explorer. Might try the cheaper route w/ the carbon clutches and if that lets go then go to the Tru-Trac.

Thanks for the help guys and keep the suggestions coming.
