First, what are the goals for power and budget?
I personally would never buy GT40 heads new, there are SO many better choices and you can save good weight with aluminum heads.
Does the engine need a rebuild?

yeah it does need a rebuild. for now i just want to get that done and at least get a decent set of heads and cam i'm looking to drop about 2000 into the engine and try to get about 300+ total hp out of it. but i want something that i can still run regular gas (89-93) octane if you have any ideas on rebuild kits i should go with or good heads and cam just let me know thanks.

    engine

do some shop'n around!!! you can pick up a low mile longblock pretty cheap, throw a Motorsport cam in it, with a 100shot N.O.S. and be hittn 12's all day!!! Even look around and ask some machine shops, i picked up a roller 302 that a guy had rebuilt, but never paid and it sat there for a year......they tried getting ahold of him one last time, then i got it for $700.....
    JUNK IT!

You can get it done with $2000 .......gt40s from a xplorer, use the intake, get the N.O.S. kit, get rid of smog(but save the parts you take off) Electric fan, Bump the timing ...........YOU CAN DO IT!!!
