    More FUBAR

Took me fn 4 hours to remove the rear today. Was going nice and smooth up untill I got to lower control arms. Lower control arm bolts just sucked. Drivers rear bolt doesn't even come out no matter what you smack the sob with. Driver front bolt even though it was "tight" never sucked the frame close to bushing so hole is elongated and that bolt was bent. Had to sawzall it to get it out. Probably will have to do same with passenger one. Though the axle bolt came out easily on that side. Found that pinion flange turned up enough to hit vapor line from gas tank that runs along top of tunnel. Also think I found a possible cause to the spun tube other than lots of high rpm launches. There are 3 plug welds per tube and one was missing completely. Like it wasn't welded to tube at all.

    Somethings missing

    Bent bracket, easy fix

    I think it turned....alot

Ed - I would speculate that the weld sheared off when the tube spun and the plug simply fell out. As best I've seen, the plug welds don't pentrate the casting much (if any).

As much as I like causing carnage, god do I hate working with chewed up stuff like that. I can't tell you how many times I laid under the car saying I was going to turn things down and take it easy "next time" ... I feel for you messing with those control arm bolts, BTDT.

Got the rear apart this evening and it's FUBAR. I need new axles(driverside the area that rides on wheel bearing is all tore up but bearing is good) the True-trac I think is still usable but passenger side cover that bolts on wasn't tight and moves somewhat so parts of housing edge was broken off. Nothing I think is a big deal but I do need to tear into diff and make sure it's ok. If good I'll just retorque bolts with red lock tight. Ring and pinion looked perfect and lucky for me the small housing edges of diff dropped to bottem and didn't get in the teeth.

Axle splines, axle splines ... we need to see the axle splines! LOL, I assume there is some twist there?

Strange how the Tru Trac chewed up like that ... When mine goes up for winter I'm going to pull mine appart and inspect everything. curious what I will find after the major overhaul from last year.

I also spy cap studs, I didn't know you had them in yours too. Also at leat interesting to me that there are NO marks on the caps fro mthe girdle cover. Makes me wonder if they do anything (beside stiffen the case and hold more oil).

As for the Caps there are marks if a bit hard to notice but the adjusters on cover are black and where they touch cap are shiny.

Got the call and it is fixed. Just need to pick it up. It was fubar pretty good. Not only spun the driver tube but bent it. Loaded that side up so much he said bearing partially spun in tube. Which explains chewed up axle. Passenger tube tweaked slightly. Now its all nice and straight so I will need to bolt tubes and fab up some bracing.

Woot got it back. Now just need to get replacement axle and seals. Fab up some bracing. I think I know how I am going to do it so just need to pick up some thick wall tubing, 1/8" or 3/16" flat plate and some rod ends and fittings. Going to run bracing from pinion area back to control arm mount and maybe from bottom of tube to bottom of center section. Going to cut off quad shock brackets, clean housing and get it painted up.

Partially spun driver side wheel bearing. Loaded up from spun and bent axle tube which also chewed up the axle.

    Nice and straight again

    Passenger side tube welded

    Driver side tube welded

    new plug welds

Fixed, now to reinforce and try harder to break :D

    Sweet Ed!

For braces it sounds like you plan to build like the SOS braces ...

    http://www.thesouthernoutlawshop.com...d082540d1e.jpg

but tie the outboard sides in the like the CHE brace?

    http://www.cheperformance.com/CartGe...ns.asp?iid=162

Should be strong if you can avoid the tailpipes (and ties your Baseline braces in to the tubes too!)

I like that weld on Swarr bar. That along with the other style I want to add would make a nice solid rear that will take a beating.

Well need new lower control arms. Bent driverside one which is a Steeda Hardcore lowers. Sucker is warped about 1/4" front to back. Enough so to crack the powdercoat off back 1/2 of arm. When I mess stuff up I do it right
