    The R title ....

Should I turn away from an R title car with no frame damage? It doesn't take a whole lot to total a Fox body at KBB or other book value. Many of these cars have been repainted by now anyway. So if I'm looking at 2 cars that are more or less the same but one has been - let's say side swiped with new fender or door or 1/4 panel and properly repaired and repainted, how much less is the R title car worth? I think I could maybe overlook the previous damage- to a point, but my biggest concern is resale value when it's my time to sell. Seems like this title class is the kiss of death with the red flags from Carfax and Autocheck, and in some states it's apparently a real big deal with a different color for the title paper even.

Run fast or not so fast ???

if its been repaired correctly, there's nothing with an R-title... but i think general rule is that you'll get 50-60% of its value upon resale... so, when considering purchasing, don't pay more than 50 or 60% of the value of a clean title car....

I know several people who had r-title vehicles and never had an issue... I had a r-title Harley Davidson F-150 and absolutely loved it.... never had a single problem with it!

Two points to consider (assuming the repairs are correct) ...

There will always be a negative against the value. No matter how nice it is, it will be tough for re-sale. Not an issue if you plan to keep it forever, but it hurts it's value for sure (unless you find the right buyer, and even they will use it against you ;) )

You will not be able to get classic / antique plates on the car. Again, not a big deal for a driver, but it prevents you from using that loophole around emisssions.

FWIW, my Capri is an R title, but effectively this car will likely never go anywhere.

u can get a collectible plate(which u have to make the car an R title anyway)Thats the way u beat emission a car that aint yet ready for classic / antique plates, even thow i see old R title cars with classic / antique plates on them! Then when u go to sell it & they ask why is it a R title,i made it a collectible to beat the emission!

Mater - At one point, I was told you couldn't get the collectable plate any more (although I never looked into it). Glad to know you can still get it. For my stuff I just use the 5K mile exemption and want to keep my vanity plate ;)

Thanks for the all the tips fellas. But now this makes me wonder about just regular car insurance- Can the R title car be insured (albeit at "book" value) thru typical car insurance companies .. Or is there some stipulation here? Maybe I better call Erie ....

Aside to Bob- Good to see that 11 in front of the decimal

    Erie won't cover an R-title... atleast i don't think....

However, my truck was insured with both Traveler's and Allied as if it were any other truck (Allied is a part of Nationwide).....

If i remember correctly, when i talked to my agent, he said that it wasnt' any more expensive just because it was an r-title...

Look it over real well. If its just bolt on stuff, i.e door, fender, It wouldn't bother me. I wouldn't get into a 1/4 panel hit. My car was an R and I couldn't see any damage at all. All the pieces had the original stickers on them. A few guys I know have R titled foxes. No biggie to me.

Well I did call Erie today, the agent is Casper Insurance on Mt Royal Blvd in North Hills. The rep was hesitant and had to ask someone else, but she told me they do insure an R title but not a flood title. She only semi-inspired confidence in me that this was a correct answer. And something too about bringing such a car by for a look see. But I do know from a previous conversation (4 years ago though) that they won't insure a car for more than it's book value.

I would guarantee there are a TON of people driving R-title cars without even knowing it. A lot of the smaller "buy here pay here" places that finance sell them without people ever even seeing the title.

There's been quite a few desirable cars that were great deals but I ultimately passed on
because they had R titles. The resale stigma is just too risky for me.

If it was something I never plan on selling, maybe.

    Enhanced inspection

I found this post on CL this morning under cars for sale as a couple of people are at odds over R titles. I don't know which original post prompted the whole thing, sure to get flagged anyway so I copied this one. But now I have to know- What the heck is an enhanced inspection?

If the car has a reconstructed title it is not worth what Kelly Blue Book says, as that is an ORIGINAL vehicle with a CLEAR TITLE - NOT A RECONSTRUCTED ONE. Your car is not worth what it was after it has been totaled and if you have to get a reconstructed title and an enhanced inspection in PA (which is harder than sellers make it out to be) then the value of the vehicle is diminished considerablely. If it was so easy to fix and get an enhanced inspection why aren't they doing it. They got the money from the insurance company for the vehicle being totaled. THINK ABOUT THAT BEFORE YOU BUY IT. HAVE A BLESSED DAY ALL. I hope I saved someone from being suckered into a false hope.
