God I hate cities... I swore after driving through pittsburgh to go out to Wolfpack I'd never go through Pittsburgh again. Pure stupidity happens at the tunnels

Edit, I'm not hating on Pittsburgh (except the tunnels) I for the life of me can't understand why people would want to live stacked on top of each other...

Because I love my neighbors so much.

In all seriousness though, I got a good deal on my house. I've always wanted to try living in a city to be close to everything so why not try it in a starter home? At least that was my thinking. I'm young and don't really need the yard space right now so I don't mind it at all. Even though I do have a small yard and off street parking.

Hell, I even light off mortars and fireworks at my leisure with no problems as of yet. Ask SK360 about that one.

Even have a nice view of the river too. So as of right now, I'm happy. I'll buy a house with a bigger yard and in a better school district when I have a family.

Its the tradeoffs that some people are willing to make.

In exchange for relatively cramped quarters, you get the advantage of public transit, more variety when it comes to restaurants, shopping, clubs, etc., and the opportunity to have world-class entertainment options (music, museums, travel) at your fingertips.

When I lived in philly, it was nice to be able to walk a few feet to the corner grocery, my choice of 10+ restaurants within a 1 block radius, a 15 minute bus ride to the Philadelphia Art Museum, 12 minutes to a flyers game, or a 30 minute cab ride to the airport (assuming I didn't want to take public transit) and I have the world at my fingertips without having to worry about parking my car. The public transit system, while not great, lets you get pretty much anywhere you want to go at almost any time of the day or night.

Not to mention it was nice to be able to go out to the corner bar and have a good time and know your walk home is short with no worry of a DUI.

So yeah, you do have the tradeoff of living on top of your neighbours, but some people see the above as advantages that make the tradeoff worth it.

EDIT- almost forgot... a friend of mine lived on the 22nd floor of the Metropolitan for a few years. all you had to do was look out the window and get a great view of the fireworks off the Ben Franklin Bridge

I can't really see why it would be even remotely close to being #1, who the heck decides this?

It's just opinion meets corporate marketing (head hunting).

This is still a good city, but it's also a dying city.

You couldn't pay me to live in the city, I can't stand living in the small town im in now. Ill be happy when there is no sign of anyone out of any view of my house. The good people to asshole ratio is way too high for me anymore.

You have to like civilization to like living in a city.

I also like nature and the country. It's just better to get away.

    I couldn't agree more.

I grew up in the city. As soon as I could afford it, I moved to the suburbs. Now I'm ready to move to the country. My neighbors are nice enough I guess, but I'd prefer privacy and quiet. If I want to wrench on one of my shitboxes at 3 AM in my driveway or something I'd like to be able to.

I grew up out in rural Beaver County and went to Blackhawk high. I only went to Pittsburgh (the big city) a few times a year for Steeler games or concerts. Most of the time I hung out with friends, built hot rods, went to dive bars, hoe downs, tractor pulls, drag racing, four wheeling, and all my friend's had farms and hunting camps. I always drank hard and carried a rifle around (not at the same time) but I never killed anything. I just love being in nature. The country is in my bones. When I turned 21, I realized there was a big world out there I had never experienced and I was just a hick from the sticks. So I moved to Denver, then Chicago, Atlanta, New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia and back to Pittsburgh a few times in between. This place is like gravity. I move back to Pittsburgh every 5 years or so. It must be the water? I still have a place to get away though, right now it's back in old Beaver County. When I get away on weekends, I still get stir crazy after a while and can't wait to get back to civilization. I just thrive on the "interaction" of the city. So I like both. People who hate city life tend to be people that don't like people. Especially those that are not like them. I can understand that feeling. No insult, but I think that is a conservative mindset. Home is like a fortress designed to keep the world out. Gated suburban communities. The country estate. Being open minded isn't easy. Liberal people in general tend to like other people, civilization, variation, nature, adventure, the spice of life. That usually means city life.

All that said, Pittsburgh isn't my #1 place to move to.

But it is a unique and interesting place. Dare I say, it's my home.

Yes, why yes we did. And I'm pretty sure it threw shrapnel all over the place and we really didn't have an incident.

Plus, I'm 5 min from the console energy center and all the other sporting events. I'm 10 min away from being in the Southside or Station Square. And I'm a mile from 279 to head up North if I wanted to.

I have no desire to have 50+ acres and sitting on a lawnmower for 4 hours a week. Screw that noise.

I'm with the country guys on this one... However, i DO see why pittsburgh could get rated as a top CITY to move to...

I grew up in the country, 25 mins from the nearest bit of modern civilization, and I would do anything to be back in that area... unfortunately, actuarial jobs will only ever be available where there's lots of money and the risk of loosing that money exists (cities)..... I have been living in Pittsburgh since 2004, and even though i like it better than any other city i've ever visited, i still look forward to getting out....

Thus, i'm still going to be building my home in the woods east of Monroeville... i'll still have the country setting, where neighbors are not visible and i can enjoy the peacefulness of country living, but i'll still only be 15 mins from monroeville and all the shopping/restaurants/etc that are there... i'm willing to deal with teh 1hr. commute to work, just so that i can get away from the city....

lol, I was just laughing about this on my way to grab my lunch out of the fridge.... The country fortress with rifles below every window just seems to be the stereotype of a typical SCS member in my mind at least.

I am more conservative then I am liberal but I love living in the city.

I don't mind visiting the city but living there is not an option. Neighbors can be the greatest thing but one bad one can ruin it all. Im the kind of person who could care less if the neighbor next door is screwing sheep, if thats their thing, so be it and it none of my business. I like to work in the garage, drive loud cars, etc. and think its my right to not have people worry what I do with my property, what parked on it, etc. I don't complain when the neighbor is up at the crack of dawn cutting his grass even though it wakes me up sometimes, I dont complain about the neighbors kids making racket all day, or the neighbors dog barking. Do these things get on my nerves? Yep, but its their right to do these things. Live with it, wish others could do the same. Everyone has different views and hobbies but many are quick to just think of themselves and try to stop someone else from enjoying theirs.

There is some validity in there Lou.

I guess I'm lucky because where I live, my neighbors don't do much to irritate me. If anything, I'm the one on my street that absolutely makes the most noise and never had any real issues with my neighbors except maybe one lady. Although it does seem like Pittsburgh Police are on my side when she freaks out.
