    06 expedition trouble

I have an 06 Expedition with a 5.4 and 62k miles on the clock. It started this nasty miss at full throttle about 85% of the time. It will jerk real bad and you can here a back fire from the motor and the exhaust, then the engine light will flash and sometimes stay on. I took it to my mechanic and he put the snap on scanner on it. It said #1 missfire. Changed the coilpack, still ran like crap. Tried to change the plug, and broke the bottom off in the head. I bought the extraction tool from napa, got it out and replaced the plug, ran like crap. Put the scanner back on and it said #5 missfire. Changed coil, no luck. hooked scanner back up and now it is missfire on #3, #6 and #7. I picked up all new coil packs and replaced, exact same results!! Changed the fuel filter for the hell of it, no better. Is there a module that controls the coils or is it controlled through the computer? I hate to try to pull any more plugs for fear that they will continue to break. Thanks for any help!!

Are there any other codes? I would definately say change the rest of the plugs. We have had a few come in with misfires and plugs usually fix it honestly but every once in a while the coil packs do cause some issues. Those plugs are a bit of a pain. We have the kit for them and it works but I still hate them.

Check fuel sending driver located in drivers side rear wheel well...they are aluminum and corrode...you have to remove it to see both sides.

The symptoms you describe don't sound like this would be the issue, but those drivers are known to be a problem on those vehicles. (actually the location is the issue, not so much the unit itself)

Hi Jason - sorry to hear about the troubles with the Expedition.

I think you should check out ( if you haven't already ):

    www.ford-trucks.com

It is a great site with more info on any Ford truck than you can imagine.

I'd think a few quick searches in the proper area would get you a bunch of info on people who have already worked their way through this problem.

    Good luck!

62k and you broke a plug off in the head? Geez, I must have good luck, I changed mine in my 5.4 with 173k on it without any issues lol. Good luck, sounds like you need to change the rest of the plugs though.

Run a compression on the bad cylinder? Valve seats come out of these heads.

Yea, I bought all of them and intended to install them, but I am nervous that I am going to end up taking the heads off to get the broken ones out that the tool can't get out. It can not be down for more than a day.

Before you do anything else you should replace all the spark plugs. The 5.4L 3v , is very common for spark plugs breaking. The rest will probably break too. There is a procedure for removing them but never works for me, what works best is use a 3/8 air impact, once you hit the trigger to remove the spark plug dont stop until plug is out. Have never broken one or damaged the threads using an impact to remove. The problem is the design of the plug, its gets carbon on the bottom part and get seized in the head, and because the plug is crimped together in the middle it separates when you try to remove it. When reinstalling apply anti-sieze to lower part of plug. Ford no longer uses that plug design in 09 and up. Good luck
