    Tko

It is the older style TKO. Around 15k miles on it. Shifts fine, doesn't make any strange noises, always had a pro 5.0 shifter on it,always had GM syncromesh fluid in it. Thanks.

The 1st generation TKO is essentially a TKO 500. I think they are a little stronger though. There is a few parts inside that are a little different from the TKO 500.

    Hope this helps ya Mark.

I always understood that the early TKOs were the strongest ones they made before they started making the 500s and 600s.

Can this trans be modified to work in a 94/95 GT that now has a stock T5?

    Tko

Yes,I believe that the early TKO's were the strongest ones built before the 500/600 came out. I actually prefer the early style TKO's. I have one in my 427w car too.

I am not an SN95 guy at all,but I believe that this trans setup will bolt right into a 94-95 car also. You might have to modify your trans crossmember though. Someone chime in if I am wrong.

What motor / estimated horsepower was this setup behind? Lot of track use? 1/4 mile times?

In your opinion, what is the max power this TKO can handle? And the clutch? Do you have a part # for it? Make/part # for the flywheel?

    Thanks

    Tko

Thanks for the help Wick. You probably know these transmissions better than most.

I did some research and the older style TKO was rated at 425lb/ft. It is beefier than the 3550 since it has a 26 spline input shaft and 31 spline output shaft along with some other improvements. I believe the flywheel is a FMS,but not positive. It is billet steel and has a removeable weight on the back side(has 50oz weight on it). The clutch is a centerforce dual friction(has orange pressure plate)with a 26 spline clutch disc. I could not find a part number on it though.

The trans was behind a mild 308 motor. It had a mild cam,DOOE heads, performer rpm carb intake, etc. Probably made about 275hp or so. The car was never ran with slicks as it was just a street car.

Thanks for the info. I need to do some research and see if a TKO will fit in a '66 without modifying the transmission tunnel. I've heard conflicting stories on that. I'm planning a stroked 351 sometime down the road, and when that time comes I know my stock T5 is not going to cut it, so that means either a G-force T5 or a TKO.

    Merry Christmas!!

    Ron,

The TKO will fit if you get lowering engine mounts. Otherwise you will need to raise the tunnel.

Thanks John - I've heard that as well. However, with my car sitting as low as it does, my headers are only about 4 inches off the ground, and I'm concerned that lowering my engine mounts will cause me big problems unless find a set of long tubes that don't hang so low. Another thing that scares me is that some people have had to modify their tranny tunnel even after lowering their engine mounts. And my Aviad 7 qt oil pan is really close to the lower crossmember as it is now - so lowering might not work at all in my case. Lots of variables in the case of my car. I wish I had the loads of tunnel room like you do in your '69...then this would be really easy.

badnotch - thanks for posting the additional info

Pic of the TKO setup added. This is a very nice setup. Everything is very clean and in great shape. It needs to go to fund upgrades to my 427w car.

not 100 % sure about the tko's, but I know if you try to put a t5 and bell out of a 79-93 stang in a 94-95 stang, the clutch fork will hit the trans tunnel...nothing a heavy hammer can't solve, lol

juiceman - I think the '94/'95 T5 bell is slightly different than a fox T5 bell. That may be part of the problem.

As far as I know the sn bellhousing has a thicker mounting flange moving everything towards the rear of the car about a 1/4".
