i bet more people in the sticks have more guns than in the ghetto.. 2¢
i live in castle shannon, kinda nice in the south hills however, there are plans to overhaul the intersection of 51 and 88 like they did to W liberty years ago.. so brentwood to greentree will suck on 51 in the years to come, just to keep in mind..
south hills > north hills,, and F&@K rt 28..
Having grown up in the city and lived there for 30+ years it's not what it use to be. The public school system stinks for starters, most nice neighborhoods have turned into ghetto's.
I still often visit the city a couple times a week cause my parents still live there and I hang out there on friday nights at certain locations but I would never move back.
There are plenty of nice areas just outside the city and may I suggest staying out of allegheny county if at all possible.

You can cheer for the Pens and Stillers... but really don't talk about this game of Baseball and a team called "The Pirates"....
I would also recommend living in the Robinson Township / Oakdale / McDonald area if you like that small-town feeling....
I live in carnegie. Roslyn heights to be exact. Kinda hidden. My taxes are almost 6000 per year. Carlynton school district. Real nice neighborhood and a few houses are for sale. A typical mortgage on a house going for 225000 is 1700 with taxes included and good credit.

Excellent info everyone! This forum never fails me. (it's about the only one I still visit, even though I don't have my stang anymore)
I'll have to compromise on the football because I have to root for WVU but I'm also a Steelers fan.

Here's my personal opinion - i've lived on Neville Island for 7 years now (all of college and the 3.5 years since i've graduated) ....
I would live North of the city if possbile... nieghborhoods are nice, some of the best schools in the state are north (North Allegheny, Pine Richland, Hampton, Fox Chapel) and the commute from the North is BY FAR the best, i don't care what anyone says... You couldn't pay me $1M a year to commute from the south hills ... I have a very easy commute coming from the West, but the number of communities coming into the city via Rt. 65 is limited i think... I also think that North of the city has the nicest housing.... I serached for 2 years before deciding to build my home, and that was my observations... There's an upscale community in each direction, but in general, i think the North is better..... As a living decision, I don't care much for the South Hills (unless you go really far south).. I think its too busy, too congested, and i despise driving that direction anytime around the normal rush hours....
However, to my ultimate suggestion - if you are willing to commute a little bit, STAY OUT OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY. taxes are FAR cheaper in all of the surrounding counties... Westmoreland county (to the EAST) is where i'm building my home and taxes are OK, but some of the communties close to allgeheny county are starting to get closer and closer to Allegheny county taxes... Butler adn Washington counties are very reasonable on taxes, and Beaver county is dirt cheap.... If you're looking at a job in Green Tree, i suppose i'd probably choose Washington county, that way you wont' have to contest with the vast majority of the traffic... you'll still deal with some of the backup from teh Fort Pitt Tunnels, but if you learn your way around, you might be able to avoid it altogether
One last thought - even thought i think that the North is the nicest area in Allegheny county, if you are looking at a job in Green Tree i think North Fayette Twp would be nice... there's some nice homes there and i think it'd be a decent transition between urban and suburban life...
I chose to built my place East of the city, but mostly because taht's where i found a piece of property in "the sticks" that suited me best.... If you're not working downtown, then i'd try to stay on the side of teh city that you're working on... in your case, South/West of the city would be a good choice....

Also, in your situation, lookign at a job in Green Tree, i woudln't rule out anything in teh Sewickley, Sewickley Heights,Wexford,Cranberry and Mt. Nebo (Ohio Twp.) areas.... Of those Cranberry is the furthest away, and it would be a quick shot down I79 to I376 (20 mins max) and then I376 to Green Tree (maybe 5 mins if you can avoid the traffic i metnioned previously)....

Bish, if he lives in wash county and works in greentree, he wont be anywhere near the ft pitt tunnels. 79 to carnegie and up nobelstown road. No traffic at all. 25 min commute tops.

+2 for Greensburg. Also, Murrysville is a little closer and Pennn Trafford school district is a very good distric. As a Greensburg Salem Alum I can say that it's a very good school as well. If you're looking for more "country" living but still being close to everything Salem Township is a good choice. I live on 270 acres, have 3 horses and all the other typical farm like things, and after a pens game I can be in my door in 20 minutes. The sign right down the road from my house says "Pittsburgh- 28 miles"
Good luck with your move

I second this thought. My personal favorite area of town and would be a very easy commute to Green Tree. McDonald is in Washington County so it will have low taxes. It's a fairly rural setting, very close to Robinson for shopping etc. and should be a very easy commute.
I'm from WV myself and I love Pittsburgh. I came here for the same reasons, more job opportunities. The thing I really love about Pittsburgh is you don't have to get too far outside of town to have a nice rural feel. I used to live right off 79 just outside of town and across the street from my house there was a nice little area of woods where I could go hike and just relax then about half a mile away there was a cow pasture that you could see the buildings of downtown from. I always thought that was kind of cool and really demonstrated what I like about Pittsburgh.
I've since moved from there and bought a house. I'm only about 3 miles from downtown off Rt. 28, but there are still woods that I can walk to and go for a peaceful hike or even ride a dirtbike in if I had one. This is not somewhere I would stay if I had kids, but if/when that time comes I'll most likely still be in the Pittsburgh area. There are plenty of places within a reasonable commute from downtown that you can have 2+ acres and a little privacy.
Bottom line is that as far as cities go Pittsburgh is pretty nice. Good luck with your decision

I live in Shaler on the edge of the north hills area, which is very nice IMO. Ross Park Mall is close, and there are TONS of businesses and restaurants along McKnight Road. I travel Rt. 28 to and from work in RIDC park every day and while sometimes there's traffic, its usually not too bad.
I used to live in Aspinwall, which is in Fox Chapel, and that is a really nice area too. It was a little too cramped for my tastes though (mostly street parking, I had one of the few places in town with a garage).
Avoid East Liberty, Homestead, McKees Rocks area, and most of the north shore IMO.
