Students fixing up car for Teenager Burnt in Fire

Posting this in case some people here might have some parts lying around that might help this kid. Def a worthy cause, just wish it would make national news. Not too often you hear about the positives people try to do.

ELEANOR, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Inside a classroom at the Putnam County Career and Technical Center students learn a lot of valuable lessons but one project has them learning lessons about life.

"This is a learning lesson on what's important in life," collision repair teacher Terry Rayburn says. "Not that it's a car, but what you're actually trying to do."

Student Josh Bartron, who's a sophomore at Winfield High School, had the car that belongs to DJ Brown hauled into class. Brown is the 15-year-old from Hurricane High School who was severely burned in a house fire while trying to save his family. Bartron doesn't know DJ and neither does the rest of the class, but when he saw the car which was damaged in the fire he knew that the class could help.

"At my church we do this thing where you pay it forward," Bartron says. "So I thought that would be a good thing to do. Plus, it would be a great present for him once he gets out of the hospital."

"It's hope for a young person," Rayburn says.

DJ wanted to fix up his Mustang, now that's what the collision repair class plans to do.

"We can't wait till we get those parts back on there and get it repainted," student Jasper Paul says.

"When ever they told him he started moving around," Barton says.

The students have plans on repairing the car and painting it black like DJ wants, but they need help getting all the parts.

"We're looking for anything to help us build this car," Rayburn says.

He says they're looking for parts for the 1988 Mustang GT Convertible including a front bumper, various lights, convertible top, interior parts and paint and body supplies.

"It could actually be a show piece, it will be real nice," Rayburn says.

"I can't wait till he sees it," Paul says. "You know to see the look on his face."

Creating something to want to come home to for a teenager already dealing with so much, but DJ isn't the only one getting something out of the project.

"I try to teach them things about life just as much as I do about cars," Rayburn says.

Rayburn says DAR Collision Repair has already offered to donate some parts but they still need many more. If you would like to help out you can call the Putnam County Career and Technical Center.
