    turbo blow through carb questions

I am planning on running a turbo blow through carb setup on my 408w. I know that a few of you on the board run this setup,so I have a few questions. Thanks in advance for the input.

What type of ignition should I use and would I be able to run the same ignition NA while I break in the motor?

What carb should I use? I have a BG race demon RS. Should I send it out to be modified,or just buy a new carb set up for blow through?

What fuel regulator should I use? I have an aeromotive A1000 pump already.

Do I need to run an intercooler or can I just use a methanol injection setup? If I run methanol injection, what setup should I use?

How big of a turbo should I use? It is a 408w,9:1 comp, tremec TKO,9" with 3.89 gears. Will probably do more street driving than track duty. I don't want a lot of turbo lag.

Hopefully Keith will see this. His blow through set up really worked well. FWIW, he ran intercooled.

Several 2.3 guys I know run BT carb and they always say the right carb, built by some one that understand them, is the real trick to it working.

I am sure you will get several different opinions but here is what i would suggest.

    Ignition?
I run a simple 6al-2 box. This box will let you hook up a laptop so you can set everything from rpm to a custom timing curve.

    Carb?
CSU or C&S are awsome carbs although they are a little pricey.

    Regulator?
The a1000 is a good pump, the regulator you want is a 13202 i believe. This reg is a boost ref reg.

    Intercooler?
Yes, as cheap as an air to air cooler is I would invest in one.

    Turbo?
Wow, that is a good question. How much h/p do you want to make? I would say anything from 75mm to 80mm would be a good start.

    blow through

Thanks for the quick replies fellas.

I will not be doing the turbo setup for a little while. But I want to get some good advice ahead of time and get a solid plan together. The turbo is the biggest part of the puzzle that is totally up in the air. I was thinking of going with a 76mm. I would like to make around 700-750 hp,but I would like it to be streetable too. I know it's a tall order,LOL.

All of the new msd digital programmable stuff is nice and the ability to set a curve and they use a map sensor which is another plus.

C&S Roger is awesome to deal with! Prosystems Patrick is great to deal with also.

    The aeromotive regulators work great.

I would definately use an intercooler.

a 76mm will get you there but an 88 will be happier and have a ton of room for growth.

    turbo

    Shaun,
I know that the 88mm would have more power potential. Do you think that the 88mm would lag a lot on the street? What do you mean that the 88mm would be happier? Thanks.

I do believe a 76mm turbo will easily make the power you want. I'm thinking that if your like every other mustang guy you will want to turn it up and with that size engine spooling a bigger turbo will not be a problem. A 76mm turbo will spool like a light switch on that engine ball bearing or not.

    blowthrough

I have heard a LOT of good things about CSU. I would like to stay with a T4 flange turbo, probably an 80mm. I still have a lot of research to do before I buy anything,LOL.

    blow through

I'll have to give them a call. Thanks for the info.

I am also needing some advice on a new ignition setup for my car that will work both NA and blow through turbo. I am leaning towards the programmable MSD 6AL-2 and HVC coil. Any input on that would be great fellas. Thanks.

Mark, I think we talked about most of it, but I'd say:
Any programable ignition like the 6Al2 or similar like the newer MSD power grid stuff should work. I just use a standard 6Al and matching HVC coil.
Not sure on the carb stuff, I like EFI ;)
I like the AIS methanol kits.
You can get away with more boost non-intercooled with a blow through, depends how much you want to push it on pump gas.
I think pump gas, non-intercooled, low wastegate boost is fine and then race gas, methanol injection, high boost with boost controller on the track is a nice combo.
They sell almost 1500hp T4 (GT47/PT88) based turbos now, for a street car the T4 packages better. The cubes you have will almost always like the bigger 88mm+ compressor but you can still make 1000hp all day with a single 76mm.

spend the loot and get a 7531 or 7535, 7531 data logs also. Mallory has a nice box that you do not need a laptop for too.

True, I like the 7531 especially for getting a boosted car to 1/8th mile.

I was thinking about doing a bt setup like u are talking about then when i added up all the costs involved i ended up going efi, my car was carbed before now. I love carbs but after buying a 300$ ignition box, a 700-950$ carb, a 150$ carb hat, carb tuning kit , accessorys, alot of the value dissapears. Plus the learning curve if youre not experienced with carb tuning. If you spend right and buy used efi is prob cheaper.

    blow through

I agree about the cost of a blow through setup adding up. I am definitely more familiar with EFI. I have only had one carb'd car,but a dozen or so EFI cars. I will have to make some decisions here real soon,LOL.
