I was looking at a 2004 Focus SVT with 84,000 on it. What things should I look for? Anyone have one?
I have a 2004 with 52K on it. I bought it with 27k and have had no issues with it at all other than the cd changer and the ac. The changer reads cd's when it wants to but does most of the time. At 35k miles the ac pump started to freeze up so I bought a shorter belt and and completely skipped the ac pulley. The car handles like a dream but is a little rough riding due to the svt suspension. As far as anything to look for, with a 04 you shouldnt have much due to fixing most all the problems in the 2 previous years. The only issue you may have that I can think of is the thermostat housing is made of plastic and they will crack and leak. There are a couple companies out there that make a metal replacement for pretty cheap. If you have any other questions just pm me.

I had an '03 SVTF that I bought with 70K miles and I sold it when it had ~120K. I daily drove the car and autocrossed it for a season. The sway bar end links went bad on the two focus's I had owned at around 80K, so plan on that. From memory I believe they cost around $40. I also replaced the power steering pump on my focus as it was leaking and the thermostat housing needed a new O ring on a small plug that is in it. I had the timing belts replaced at 110K miles and that was a hefty repair, it cost me around $700 from what I remember. Those were the only maintenance items that mine required. I LOVED that car, and if it had been a 4 door I'd still have it. The clutch is a notable part that has some issues as ford used a dual mass flywheel and many owners have seen less than normal life out of them. The throw out bearings tend to be noisy as well, mine was from the day I bought it but it never got any worse nor did I have to service it in any way. I managed a best MPG of 35mpg in mine, though my average was around 29-30. It has close gear ratios and as such I'd routinely shift it 1-3-6. Mine had the winter package which was one of the best options I have ever had on a car. It had an engine block heater and since mine sat outside it was awesome. I had it on a timer and everyday I went to work it was blowing hot air in a little over a block. A guy near Somerset/Central City bought mine.

I liked the few I drove before settling on my SVT Contour.
If you can find a EAP (european appearance package) it is badass with the Recaros, HIDS, etc.

The HID's are a must!!! Just dont hit anything, last year i hit a raccoon and took out the fog light, snapped the bumper up into the headlight and broke a tab off. In total was a 3100 buc repair and just one USED HID headlight was $995. The shop said it was the cheapest he could find. I pray that ill never find a deer or ill be looking for a new one lol

i just bought a 02 svt focus 6 speed. gotta say, damn that things easy on gas but then again everything ive ever owned only get 10 mpg. anything to look out for on the 02s?
Id have to do some research on this. I know they made some changes mid way through 2003 due to a few little issues. I really dont think it would be anything to worry about though. The biggest problem iv seen was the fuel pumps and the thermostat housing cracking. The 02 and some 03's had issues with the clutch to where it would chatter and not engage and most were covered under warranty. They all have the gertag 6 speed which is a killer german company who made all of them and I do believe they are making the trannys for the 2011 5.0's
