    Or even better, the exact form of racing you guys are drooling over happens every year in the great state of Pa. The courses are a bit shorter, but the entry fees aren't $1000 like Pikes Peak, and you get way more runs, and as an added bonus it isn't a full days drive without stopping. All you need is a car, and some safety equipment.

    Some vids of our hills in a couple of my cars:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/user/MAubele?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/XrA-K9Qgnt8"]YouTube - MAubele's Channel[/ame]

    And the horrifyingly outdated website where you can find further information about the hills...

    www.pahillclimb.org

    Hillclimbing isn't a dream, it is only 4 hours away.

    That was some old camera I had. Some of the more recent vids (from 2010) are a flip camera. The first hillclimb is Weatherly on June 12, they run all through the summer until late September. Schedule is on the pahillclimb website.

    Mark I have always wondered how these hill climb events are run. Do you walk the course as in autocross, if not how do you know your braking points, lines, etc? How do you get back down? Do they hold the next car until you turn around? It might sound trivia but I always wondered. Also, where do they "grid" the cars since these are run on closed public roads with no real parking lots and such? Have you done Polish Mountain?

    You could walk it if you wanted, but not many do (we are talking sometimes over 2 miles), if I am at a hill I have never run, I try to drive up the night before, but others i just take it a bit easy the first couple runs. Half the game is being able to quickly learn the hill.

    The grid is separated into two groups, the "race" group and the "street" group (the irony is that the street cars have gotten to the point where 6 out of ten or so of the ten fastest are street cars now), basically split the total into two groups. That entire group takes a run, then once everyone has run, they drive back down together on the course (except at Polish Mountain and Giants, they both have their own return road, they still wait until everyone has taken their run). Each hill has their own "grid", sometimes a lot at the bottom, and some have multiple pits, usually a lot near the starting line. They close the area around the hills, in the case of Weatherly, they pretty much close the town (they even have a parade on Friday night before the race weekend, and the COPS ask you to do burnouts, pretty cool).

    We usually get about 8-12 runs, depending on carnage, which varies wildly. Out of an average 80-100 cars per event, there are usually 5-10 wrecks in varying severity. Can get pretty ugly. Noone has been life flighted for a couple years though...

    Have I done Polish Mountain? Yep... :D

    Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I won't be around hillclimbing much this year, unless I decide to put a rollbar in the Cobalt.
