I think you will mostly hear powder coating these days, especially if you really want it to last. I've always had good luck with VHT paints for high heat stuff. They have two levels, one for heat, another for higher heat. Follow the directions on either ;)
+2 on the powder coating it's just reasonably affordable and the tuff, and easy to clean finish without worrying about rubbing paint off . It's also going to last longer as well. Collins on here would probably hook you up. I'm having him do a set of valve covers for me soon.

what's the recommended temperature range for powder coating? How hot can you go?

Carburetors and SAE wrenches.................
Buy Made in the USA - It Matters.
Powders cure at 400 degrees. Standard powders once cured are more than sufficient for use on non exhaust engine parts. For exhaust parts you would need high temp powder good to 1200 degrees typically or a ceramic coating. For the plenum standard powder would do the trick.
Hope this helps.

I had a painted intake for years and never had any problems with flaking and such. I will say though that poweder coating is a better option. I coat all of my own parts that fit into my tiny oven, and I have used the high heat powder coating as mentioned above on a set of shorty headers with decent results. The powder never flaked though it turned more satin in appearance after a few heat cycles than it looked when I first did it.

What color are you looking to do the plenum in?
The block and heads I would just use a high temp paint on.
