Wrecked my Car! Wheel fell OFF!! WTH!!

Well this happened a few days ago by my house. Bottom line is wheel fell off car at about 40 45 mph tried to save it but couldn't (Did manage to keep it out of someone elses property. Car had just been in to dealer for service not more than 100 miles earlier. (my girl took it to work twice since we got it back) I don't know the outcome yet. Adjuster hasn't been out to look at it yet. And there is an investigator coming out to see if the dealer is at fault to decide who is going to be penalized for the accident. Car has 33k on it. Says on reciept that they give a complementary brake check so I assume they pulled the wheel off to check and didn't put it back on tight. The holes inside the wheel are elongated from where it had been loose and the rotor scored a couple inside lines on the wheel as it was falling off. Wheel was found about 50' up from the car. I'm just glad I went for a ride and it happened to me and not to her on her way to work the next day. Do you guys think they will fix it or do you think it's being totalled? Bags aren't blown. But lower rad support is damaged and it did leak fluid.

Man, glad that you are ok!! I would be pissed as hell. That is why I always check things myself even if someone else worked on something.

I agree, I would not mention on here any more about the situation until this is investigated.

that's some scary shit right there... i nearly had a similar situation with my '94 Trans Am... but, i had been the one working on it.... went for a 1 mile drive, got home and both rear wheels were only being held on by 1 lugnut... i had wondered why the car felt like it was driving on ice...

good luck getting 'er all fixed up... i don't think it'll be totalled, but they may give you your choice... seen that happen before many times... adjuster will say "if you want me to total it, i can find enough damage - if not, i'll keep it from being totalled"

Thanks Mark, yeah I will be looking at things a little more closely this time.
I just thought how could something so simple turn into a mess. And No I agee I should not say about the dealership at least till it's over.

Least no one was hurt. I'd say lug nuts were not tightened down or were hand tight. Will be touchy with insurance if they total car or not. Seen the most minor stupid stuff total out a vehicle. Know of another that was only worth 17k and had 14k in damage and insurance actually refused to total vehicle wanting it repaired.

Damn. I always complain because the dealers use way too much torque on the wheel lugs. Being that's an 05 I'm willing to bet its a total write off. Sorry to see.
