My 2005 stock stereo just isn't getting the job done and I've always been a stereo type of Guy. I'm buying a jl 13 inch w7 subwoofer for sure so any ideas what the best amp is to power that? And what types of speakers would you recommend?

That's a little out of my price range and I decided to buy either a jl 12w6 or jl 15w6. I can't decide. Still clueless about what amp to get

sundown speakers and amps are best things on the market. there 8" subs are probable comparable to a 12" jl or kicker. and probably cheaper too.
Sundown looks alright I have never heard of them before though. And I've never heard of diamond

another good place to compare products is Crutchfield.

You might also want to use monster cables and get a Ohio Generator style alternator .

while i put an 268 Amp alternator to protect my electrics /fuel pump pressure I would also suggest a capacitor unit to level out the loads.
I think my alternater will be alright and I've seen capacitors and I have no idea what they do

i was looking at adding alittle more in my truck and so i started browsing some of the audio sites like realmofexcursion.com and caraudio.com and the sundown stufff is what seems to be the most popular and noone recommends any of the jl or kickers or anything like that.
you cant go wrong with jl , they may cost a bit more but the qualty cant be beat

A capaciter bank stores energy and releases it slowly to balance the demands of yur system. It really depends on how big aan amp you have and all teh other things on your car . I would not underestimate the value of a really well buit alternator. WHile the OEM unit is built to last the lifetime of teh car -- it has limits. It was not built to handle the stress of Blowers and lots of additions in electrics. If you have a volt meter you can see what happens when you power up a 1000 wat amp. My system runs a constant 13.9 volts when charging. At high Rpms the alternator can be turning 15,000 Rpms and you will see deterioration in the alternator bearings , and wiring will come apart.
Agree on a good alternator and Battery but the capacitor bank actually helps smooth out the Amperage required . All the high end Bugatti's and Mercedes have them built in for the very reason stated . also if you hit low amps and voltage on the amplifier it can do damage over time . Small amp no issue -- waste of money . Big amp -1000 watts good idea.
I want a jl sub because that's what I've always had and they have always been unbeatable. As far as amps go I have had Kenwood amps and they always underpowered my sub. So I was looking for a new brand of amp. What sundown amp could power the w6 or w7?

first thing to do before an alternator is do the big three.
I really just want to get a sub and an amp without a capacitor, new battery, or alternater. I just don't know the most affordable way to power a 12w7 to its max

How many amps is the stock alternator? If you are planning on getting a 1000 watt amp, you may want to think about a higher amperage alternator and a cap. You can probably get away with just a cap for a good while, but like Black Magic said the alternator will not last forever.
As far as brands of amps.....of course JL is good. Diamond has been around for a good while but I have never had any experience with them. Never heard of Sundown so I can't say anything good or bad. I've always sworn by Phoenix Gold, Xtant and Pioneer Premier Reference.
You can check out Auto Illusions and see what Rich says. I've been out of the car audio scene for a few years now and brand quaility does change. Meaning, brands that were good a few years back may not be too good now. That's why it pays to talk to an expert. Total Image in Robinson is another option, but I think I would trust Auto Illusions more....
