    5-12 Test and Tune

I headed out to test and tune tonight to try and start dialing my junk in ... The results was mostly = FAIL

The first pass was in the right lane ... I honestly have never been in a lane as bad as that lane was for me for that pass ... I dumped the clutch and never moved in 1st gear, hit the shift light, pulled second and it spun out of it ... Car went what was a terrible (for me) 1.86 60' and could only muster a 13.07 ay 105 mph ... Keep in mind my 60' times are usually 1.59-1.62, a bad one is 1.65 ... I just dont know what was up there, i just never spin that bad ...

Keep in mind, I'm trying to tune my VE tables and need data ... I pulled everything out of the car for the second pass and left very soft, almost on a bog (and also in the left lane) ... Car only went 1.75 for 60' but did manage a 12.52 at 112.73 mph ... Slow shifted, and launched soft, but I finally got some usefull data so I was happy ...

    Then the rain came :(

Keep in mind, I am trying to tune here so these passes are slow shifted and every shift goes past my desired shift point so i can build the tables out past where I will run ... Here is a snip of the log graph from the 12.50 pass ... The AFR was still in the high 10's (versus 11.5:1 target) so there a lot in there yet.

I've been able to track tune my stuff to this point, but with this weather I'm finally punting and now looking for some dyno time as soon as I can get it ... I have to get this thing tuned sooner than later ...

Saw your second pass. It definitely wasn't looking so good, looked like you bogged off the line.

Truck went a 16.0@82 uncorrected off the street hot, with the timing way too far advanced (pushing 50 degrees total). The distributor has a terrible advance curve, we didn't think it was fully advancing so we purposely set it aggressive so I could back it off and watch the truck pick up mph. Unfortunately they shut the track down at the first sign of lightning. Next time. I really think this truck has a 15.2 or so in it once I curve the distributor and get some semi-decent air. Will run it next Thursday, then it is time for heads/cam and maybe a small shot.

I was in the blue '64 Ford truck. Met a couple of you guys tonight.

It did bog, this is the amazing part of GOOD data logging ...

If you look at the image I posted, there is a cyan (light blue) line that runs vertical about the middle ... That is just a data reference line, but to the left of that is first gear ... The yellow line in the top pane is RPM ... You can see it drop with the clutch drop, then make a hitch, and drop further, that's the bog ... It actually dropped to 3045 rpm at that point which is unheard of for me ... also corresponding data is horizontal Cyan line (MAP = Boost) shows the boost coming up off the launch, then drop, then come back ... it's right with the RPM bog (as it should be) ...

It's really tough to share on line, but I can play back an entire pass at any speed I like and see what happened at any point, to any parameter. Although there are only a few shown in the graphs, every single parameter is logged with this set-up and I can pick what I want to see in the playback, and in what pane of the graph ... amazing stuff.

I never even made it to the street lanes to BS and check things out tonight ... Got wrapped up in my deal and didn't make it over there. Hope to meet you next week.

That is pretty awesome actually. The amount of work it takes to get a car to run well and make some consistent good passes is something I don't really think about you know.

Mike - I think they got it. I was expecting 115-116 mph in that lane and was surprised to see 112. I went through a bunch of old right lane runs and 330 out was within reason of those. I really wanted one more shot to prove it, but then the rain came :(

Well ... On the street, I absolutely love it ... It is really fun to cruise with it. At the track, to this point i've made three passes, and not one of them was a good, clean, all out pass for me. It's shifted great and feels great, but the real answer comes with full on power shifts and i've not done one yet :(

Well lets hope. I did heard that they went through everything including the height of the sensor and distance between them. I usually only run the right lane but will be waiting to see what you think.

Dammit, I wanted to run on the run with inflated MPH :)
I'd bet money you're going back to the short Pro 5.0 handle Bob, I always did.
I'd like to try an MGW in a future Mustang but I've had a Pro 5.0 in every stang but my first (Hurst).

LOL, they funny thing is, the faster you was, the less it helped ;) the 150 mph guys likely didnt notice ...

This is a Pro 5.0 Base. I never could use the Pro 5.0 handle, just too short and too far forward for my fat ass to have good reach. The old combo was actually a UPR handle on a Pro 5.0 base. Frank and I had this discussion the other night, this is actually his base, and he has my UPR base ... neither of us can find a difference in those and dont see a lot of reason to swap back (although the UPR is a Tri-Ax knock off).

I'm still liking the long handle at the track until I can point to a missed gear or something ... It really fits me well strapped in and is so old school its stupid ... I feel like I'm rowing a top loader with it in there :D

You couldnt give me a Hurst base, I had one and it strange ... I have driven the MGW's and its a great feeling shifter. If they could put a regular bolt on handle on there without changing it, I would buy one. I dont like the position (angle that cant be changed) of their shifters.
