I'm in a wine rut... help?

Homemade wine is quite good, but there are occasions where I want something different... something someone else has crafted, or something I'll want to cellar beyond the 1-2 year time frame that my wine usually lasts.

(ok who am I kidding... its lucky if it lasts 3-4 months... LOL...)

If you've had something recently that you really liked, post up the details. If the wine was reviewed by one of the majors, let me know if you agreed/disagreed with their score.

I want to try something different and I might be in PA soon so I'll want to take advantage of lower taxes and bring a couple of bottles back.

The old lady had something from Berringer private label 2008 35.00 a bottle on wineanthlogy.com at a wine dinner she loved it so much I had bought her a bottle off there. I can check into it more if you like. she said it reminds her of creme brulee

thanks for the suggestions! I just googled both of them and they look interesting. There is a berringer cab experience you describe matches the reviews so that's on the list.

And im always up for checking out vineyards.

I'll be coming to PA this summer, so no worries on shipping.

    Wine > Beer anyway ;)

these guys always have something going on Sunday afternoons. wifey and I find ourselves over there often. we usually like dry red wine, but we don't particularly like their merlot, cab., etc... we do like the bleufrankisch (sp?). it's a lighter red with hints of black pepper.

We really like their reisling and the chardonnay isn't bad.

... afterwards, I do have to go to Applebee's and suck down a few "tall" drafts to get the wine taste out my mouf, though.

Hmm... sounds like you and I are close in what we like (dry reds). Do you remember what in particular didn't strike you with their cab? Their description of it makes me really want to give it a go. Their bleufrankazomgwtfbbq sounds like it might have some promise too.

I don't mind a white on occasion but there seems to be less of a correlation between website tasting notes and my palate when it comes to some of them. I had a Jackson-Triggs Sauv Blanc "proprietors reserve" that sounded good (EDIT2- tasting note: "A brilliantly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc with bold aromas of ripe grapefruit and melon accentuated by a distinctive herbaceous note.") only to find that the taste reminded me of a cat litter box with a very acidic ("IT BUUUUURRNNNS!! IT BUUUUUURRRRRNNNSSS!") finish. It turned me off to whites for a while.

EDIT - yeah, we'll make cam do it. Im sure we can bribe him with something if we must ;)

I don't recall from memory why we don't like the cab. Nothing jumped out... just kind of flat and bland and well too dry. Now, we'll just have to go try them ALL again. damnit!

PA DUI > CTS TT KIT

Should we inform him or just drop ship it to his house?

Glades Pike has something called Mountain Mead. They sell it at Sarnelli's... that market at the intersection of 31/711/381 near Cam's house. It's a honey wine. very strange, but good... I thought.

Lets surprise him with a drop ship then he'll feel "obligated"

I know where you mean. I've never had mead (fermented honey) so I'm totally game for giving it a try. Hell, might as well get some beer too while i'm at it :)

My buddy helps put together a Wino club monthly, I've been out to "Winfield Winery" near Butler/Cabot Pa last year, and just this past Sunday I went out to "Greendance Winery at Sand Hill" in Mt. Peasant with'em and pick't up 2 of their Port wines that are pretty daaang Chronic!! Greendance is like a Wine Resort getaway, they have bands play on certain days, also have food, like bake't goods n all and was a very high class place!
I've also been to one out near Freeport called "The Vineyard by Mellon"! All had reeeally greeeatt wines for sure! The people that go regularly to the wino club state that "Narcisi Winery" is one of their favorites and might be one of the best around!

Why do I get the feeling that coming to pitt is going to cause me to go broke in the span of 12 hours? :)

F that, dude... you provide the satirical, sarcastic, cynical conversation I know you're capable of and I'll buy booze all night long.

Adam Silver... Greendance isn't that high class... they just advertise in the Post-Gazette like crazy. Look at all the license-plate holders in the lot. Bobby Rahal, #1 Cochran... etc. high end hardware with high-maintenance cougars driving.

Wifey and I live about 10 miles from there. We don't consider ourselves wine connoisseurs at all, but we like what we like and we like that goofy crowd. One time we were there trying some wines and a guy a little more redneck than us, reaches between us and grabs a whole handful of the oyster crackers and munches 'em down like bar peanuts. You're supposed to eat "one" of them in between your wine samples to cleanse your palate. I've never done it, but it was hilarious when he took a whole handful and kept walking along.

I bet Philly could really class that place up, too.
