I was really getting concerned reading this thread, then faith was restored

I can't add much on the local stuff, I've had some amazing wines over the last couple months, but they was either German local stuff (lots of Bavarian white), or Chinese stuff and I cant read the label ... none of the above are exports either ;)

I did bring home a bottle of Chinese Bijou (Translates white liquor) if you are interested, it takes a solid 12 pack of beer to wash that taste out, then it comes back the next day.

The wine in a box? I like that stuff too... its great "oh wow these 30 people just showed up at our campfire what do we do?" wine!

There's a few other companies up here that are doing this "ecofriendly" thing of putting wines in 750ml cartons that look like supersized juice boxes. Supposedly its greener to produce but doesn't change the flavour of the wine. Havent tried it yet but I might.

There are a lot of companies going to the 'box' lately. It used to be of the thinking that the cheap stuff was in the box, but apparently, whatever tree the cork comes from IS in short supply and some of the major labels have figured out that the vacuum-packed bag (there is a bag inside the box) actually keeps the wine more 'secure' than the traditional bottle/cork method. Wifey is the wino in this family and she has thoroughly enjoyed Hardy's, Black Box, Fish Eye, Corbett Canyon, etc... in the box.

Dude, the box is 3 liters (litres for you, you crazy Canuck). That is 4 bottles of wine and it's usually between $15 and $22 for the good stuff in PA. At $22, that's $5.50/bottle.

I have a bladder bag system for my homemade wine. it stores 2 litres and when you run out you simply grab another bag and put it in the dispenser. Great for homemade wine as you always have it on tap without having to worry about oxidation from hitting the air.

3 litre boxes of wine up here usually go for about 30+ bucks IIRC, but then again there is no such thing as a bottle of wine for less than 10 bucks (taxes...).

as an aside, you have no idea what a pain in the ass it was to retrain my fingers to type "litre", "metre", "centre", "colour", "behaviour", etc. I'm also surprised you didnt try to convert litres to quarts, ya crazy yank!

Well, well well... isn't it funny that the 1/5th or fifth or whatever you want to call it is still the standard means of measurement in the booze world. Yes, that's a 1/5 of a gallon. A gallon is 128oz. A fifth is actually 25.6oz, but the European community likes to go with 750ml which is about the same, but when you get into your 'big' bottle of 1.75L (everybody likes to call this the HANDLE or the 1/2 gallon), it's only about 58oz which comes up, oh a GLASS short of 1/2 gallon. Sneaky sneaky sneaky state stores / wine producers... blah blah blah.

Whats even funnier is that the inch came before the metre, yet now the inch is defined in terms of a metre.

Just like the 750 is now the standard for alcohol :)
