I don't think anyone is doubting the Mac/Snap on stuff is better but the OP has a 300.00 budget in mind. He isn't going to do much wrenching with 3-4 Mac / Snap on tools, LOL.

Listen, for $300 you can get a full set of Craftsman hand tools (sometimes a small toolbox if they have a special) and you can take a broken tool in and get it replaced no questions asked.
Best bang for the buck period, plus if you live in any area of the city there is a Sears close by.
If at any point in time you think they are inadequate, start upgrading. For the work I do on my cars (that doesn't require a shop with $30k+ in Snap-On tools) they have been more than adequate.

If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it's marketed right, you'll buy it. But if it's real, you'll feel it. IG: @donuttrump

I think this question all depends on how much money you want to spend and how often you use your tools. I personally have the $299.00 Craftsman kit and I love it. I bought it on sale 2 years ago for like $229 or $249 and I can take on just about any project I will confront with it. However, I do not use my tools on daily basis and I do not need them for my "real job". I consider myself a shade tree mechanic so this kit fit within my needs, budget, and availability. If I depended on my tools on a regular basis, I would probably go with Snap-On, but prices are through the roof IMO.
I should state that my snap on stuff is at my work place where I use them all day everyday.. at my house I have a mix of everything including some proto stuff
I'll put up another vote for Craftsman. I bought one of their medium sized sets about ten years ago and it has served me well. It's nice to have that piece of mind that you can use the tools as inappropriately as possible and still get them replaced, lol. Of the set I think I've had all three sized ratchets replaced at least once but none of the sockets or wrenches have gone bad. If I had nicer ratchets I doubt I'd use them as hammers as much though, haha...
I can definitely see speedracer's point here too. If I were in his situation I would want the best possible so I wouldn't be left stranded. But for Nate's purpose I think Craftsman would be the way to go. I will say that I'm a former Sears employee so I might be a little biased :)

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm gonna go with the 263 piece Craftsman set. I know there is better stuff out there but I'm sure this will be good for what I'm using it for. Plus I like that I can get it replaced at Sears if anything does break.
$225 plus my cousin works there and can get me a decent discount.

You'll be happy with the craftsman tools. Mechanic friends make fun of me all the time for it, but I have built a few complete cars with nothing but crap mixed and matched hand tools, Craftsman and other junk. I have almost lost fingers at the hands of Craftsman ratchets though, can't even begin to say how many I have broken. Way better than Harbor Freight though, I broke a 3/4" breaker bar from there a couple times, that'll wake you up.
