    PA funky looking Antique plates

Growing up, PA had the nicest Antique Plates. The Purple with white letters was a badge of honor to a vehicle 25 years or older. Leave it to a Rendel Administration to screw it up. Someone in our PA govt decided to make the antique plated look like the rest. Would love to find out who did this? To make matters worst, they throw this old picture of a vintage car on the plate. Yep - they started with those new FUGLY antique plates several years ago. I can't stand them either. Fortunately, both our '66 Mustangs have the old style plates!!

I guess you could put a picture of your car covering that eyesore. I want them to Bring back the PURPLE ONES!

My 86 has the classic plates and is ready for Antique one. I do not want that ugly plate. I have a friend who has a purple tag said he would sell it to me. The only way I can transfer it is to buy a antique registered purple plate car off of a person and transfer it (with the purchase of the car) to me. What a stupid state we live in!

I hear ya - the plate is crazy ugly. But the $30 annual inspection is even uglier!!

Just think how people will feel after you beat them and they're stuck looking at that Model T between your taillights!!

Hey what all needs to be done to apply for the classic plates? I need to get one because my inspection is almost up and my car won't pass emissions! haha

I know you need to send in some photos, but what else? can I just send in stuff to get it, or do I have to actually go to a DMV office and do stuff?

I have classic plates. Mainly because they are white and look better than antique.

They have the same basic benefits as antique; lifetime no renewal, emissions exempt,
limited to pleasure driving and club/parade events, 5k mile annual driving limit. As far
as the emissions exempt it's really the same as under 5k emissions exempt for regular
registrations (the computer checks your mileage since last inspection).

You need pictures from all 4 sides. The car must be unmodified. They actually rejected
mine the first time around for stickers in the windows.

100% Agreed. When I was younger I always wanted to own an old car so I could get the special plate because it stood out! I'm glad I was able to snag a black DARE plate before they went to the all one style template!

If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it's marketed right, you'll buy it. But if it's real, you'll feel it. IG: @donuttrump

There is no way for them to clock the mileage on a car with antique plates, as there is no inspection ( or emissions ) and no annual registration. The only way for you to get busted is if an irritated neighbor sees you driving the car all the time and knows the rules and turns you in, or if Johnny Law happens to see you driving it every day ( especially in February here in Pgh, when no self-respecting "antique" should be on the road ).

With classic plates, since you still need an annual inspection ( not emissions ), they can and do track the mileage from year to year.

AAA can give you all the details regarding photos needed to apply for the plates. And call your insurance guy about what is needed for classic or antique insurance. It saves you a ton of money and you get an agreed value for the car in the case of a total loss.

ahh I didnt know about the mileage regulations. The last two times I had my car inspected I think I was around 8k miles between inspections. So I tend to go slightly over each time.

What will they do if its time for inspection and you are over 5k??

The law keeps tabs on cars with these plates more than you think. They
are aware of people abusing the driving limitations.

Most specialty plate cars are fairly recognizable by Johnny Law.

I got pulled over once because JL saw me driving mine two days in a row
which is against the once per week pleasure driving. I didn't get a ticket,
but I also lied about being on my way to a club event.

I've got the antique plate on my junk and I have never had ANY issues with it.

Every now and then you may get pulled over by PSP accidently because they see no stickers, but they just apologize and I'm on my way.

I love the "absolutely NO inspection whatsoever" aspect of the antique plate.

Who really gives a $hit if they are ugly?

Classic has that damn 5K mileage restriction which they can easily keep tabs on because you still need the PA safety inspection every year.

Antique is the way to go if your car is old enough IMHO!!

Truer words have never been spoken.

That being said, I still have the purple plates from '93 on my '64. But I could also care less.

Here's my new classic plate. A little different than the one shown above. The Pennsylvania and Classic car are flipped. Other than that they're the same.
