Winter 11-12 Projects

Thought I would start a thread and see what everyone is working on over the winter? Share some details and pics if you have any and keep us updated throughout the cold months of western Pa...

Well my project will probably drag through at least this winter and next, but hopefully will be done for summer 2013. Anyways a friend of mine and I have begun work on my 33 Ford Truck. It is a complete frame off build with a 1960's style Hot Rod theme. It will see most of it's time on the street but will be built to handle a couple passes down the 1320.

Engine for now is a full roller 406 SBC with a tunnel ram and 2x4's. Estimated crank HP is between 480-520. However this could change... I have some other ideas/options that are a little more radical. Transmission will be a built 700R with a 3200-3600 stall. Putting it to the ground will be a Ford 9in. posi with 4:56 gears.

As far as looks... the truck will be gloss black. Wheels will be the old-style Hailabrand kidney bean slots. Interior will be black with a set of 60's style bucket seats. A simple 4-point roll bar will help stiffen up the truck/chassis. The body of the truck will be channeled 1-2 inches over the frame, with about a 3 inch chop to the roof, while the bed will also be shortened about 6-8 inches to match the rest of the body lines appropriately.

Anyways... this is where I'm at now. Been gathering parts for a few months and it is time to get started. Let the games begin...

What else is being built out there?

scott... what does your car weigh? thats one thing i have to my advantage with building this 33. early guesses seem to put it around 2200-2400 lbs. i'll be extremely disappointed if it isn't an 11 second ride with the power to weight ratio i'll have.

With that power and such low weight and those gears, if you're able to put any of it to the ground I think you'll be into the 10s...

yeah... but traction will be king. a guy i know has a model a truck that is similar in size/weight that dyno'd 550 at the crank and he just clicked off a 9.73 in the good fall air. he has been messing with the truck for about 4 years though and it took alot of trips to get it dialed in like that.

here is a youtube of one of his passes...

Holy frame twist batman!! Looks like fun!! Can you box the framerails for extra strength, or are you using an aftermarket frame?

i'm using the stock 33 frame, but will be boxing it. the 33 frame is a little stronger and tougher than the model a frames, like his truck. yeah i think it will be a wicked fun little ride. initially i was going to use a muncie 4 speed, but i think ill be too busy holding on and shouldn't try to bang gears on top of it.

I'm hoping my "winter" project will be back on its own feet before the actual calendar date that winter starts!

I'm livening up a 1988 Thunderbird. They are the same basic fox chassis as the Mustang and about all the pony parts cross over. Mine is a Sport Coupe that had the pathetic 150hp standard output 5.0L and AOD. Last night I just fired it up with a HO 5.0L and T5. Still have to button a bunch of items up. But I also have upgraded the brakes on all four corners w/ Turbo Coupe parts...went from 10" to 11" on the front and used a TC rear w/ discs and 3.55's. May also bump the gears up to 4.10's.

So far about all the parts I've used to upgrade have came from SCS members.

If that gets done before January then my wife's '90 GT 'vert needs some love....front seats and oil pan gasket.

We will try to get some work done on my project. It has been on the jacks for 2yrs. now and some work is done. We found a nos 1/4 panel in NY and a outer wheel panel and both are in place. The cowl panel replacement is on the car and waiting for the welder/fab. dude to finish it. After that the donor roof panel will be glued on, and the car can go on the roto stand for the under work to finish. Hopefullly the car may come out of the shop next year for paint.

You hiring in some help? Lol.

See my threads for my winter ordeal. Capri is getting a G Force, spray, and maybe one other little suprise ;) Convertible is in paint now and will start some power more when I get it back ... Had planned a turbo swap for it, but now leaning to building a NA combo for it. We will see.

Looks like a fun, yet intense, project. What are the plans for it?
Dan -- 2003 Cobra DSG Coupe #6009

If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it's marketed right, you'll buy it. But if it's real, you'll feel it. IG: @donuttrump

When it is done, it should be a 10 sec. drag car that will also be street legal. But i'm not sure i will be able to drive it at 80yrs old!

Only thing I'll be doing on my "project" is the rear main seal, new rear hoops, tranny flush, and maybe some springs if there's money left in the bank. A lot of this winter's savings will be going to a down payment for a house I'm thinking...
