    Selling to a car dealer

Anybody ever sell a vehicle outright to a car dealer? Checked what my truck was worth on Autotrader and got back a typical lowball, but for the hell of it had the quote sent out to willing dealerships. Cochran responded. Might take it up there Friday or Saturday to hear what they offer. Anyone have experience or tips? Seems like a really no hassle way to sell a vehicle.

I sold my 01 GT to Cochran outright in 2003 or 2004. They gave me a check and I gave them the car. No hassle at all.

My buddy Mike just sold them his 07 mustang gt. They low balled him bad 13k for a 16 17 k car in my eyes but no one hit on it here nor craigslist so car had to go.

I sold my first 05 f150 to my buddys ford dealership back in jan 08.
I think I got 2k less than blue book but it was paid off which was nice.
shortly thereafter, the values of big trucks tanked due to gas prices, it took my buddy six months to sell the truck!

I got around 2000 less than blue book too. It kinda sucked, but it was done quick. Selling a 3 year car for book to a private owner seems like it would be tough. Not alot of people have 16 or 17K laying around to buy a car outright. Add that to the fact that the dealers had tons of them with warranties and is was worth it to just sell it to the dealer. When I sold my 4 year old 93 5.0 LX vert outright it took months. I did get my price, but it took forever. Another option may be to consign it to a lot. I sold a Dodge truck on consignment. It also took a long time, but I didn't have to deal with the phone calls, etc.

Expect a wholesale offer minus reconditioning from a dealer. If your truck is in real good condition they might give for a few hundred more considering they wouldn't have to pay this money getting a "like truck" back from the auction.

I sold my 06 Hemi Ram to a dealer. Transaction is simple, if they want it you will be out in 15 minutes. 2-3 grand less is about right. They had to put tires on mine but otherwise, they just out it on the lot.

I'd think a 4x4 truck would sell in a heartbeat this time of year on craigslist. If the dealer will give you $2k less than KBB, why not list it on CL for $1k under KBB. If you are really pressed for time I can see going the dealer route, but if you have a little time to go the CL route you can end up with more $$ in your pocket, and help to pay off any Xmas bills.

Mine was ready for the lot other than tires. If it isn't all shined up expect to get a lower offer. The used manager took mine for a short drive and bought it.

I had my truck on CL and truck trader for 4000 under blue book and only got people offering even less. That was a year ago, so you might have better luck now.

Well Cochran bought it for $11k. Actually was pleased with that. It was zero hassle, done in about a 1/2 hour. Truck was gonna need tires before the snow flew, had a bad tick that sounded like a lifter, minor chips, bad scrape on the bumper/paint, the pushbutton four wheel drive occasionally didn't work, and it ate wheel bearings every 30k miles. I'm pleased. :)

Are you guys getting 2-3K below Retail, Private Party, or trade-in value? If I got 2K below Retail I would drive this Cobalt to Cochran tomorrow.
