I agree with treating people as you would like to be treated. I would never expect someone to do something for nothing. Tim always gives me incredible deals on all the work he does for me, and sometimes I feel like he may be losing money on it. I would never want him or anyone that does work for me to lose money. They have to put clothes on their back and feed their families too and I would expect them to feel the same way I do. Problem is, and it's a shame, there are definitely people out there who are out just to get something for nothing and will take advantage of anyone they need to just to accomplish their goal.

Tim,
I know what your saying, I am in hvac industry and people are always trying to get something for free. Remember, nice guys finish last, i've learned that lesson the hard way. I lost my business because I was a nice guy. You don't need to worry about me cause you have my business for life, why, cause your honest and fair, keep it up it will work

No sadly you are not the only person to have to deal with it. I used to deal with it all the time, since I was on the phone with them most of the time. People would call anywere from a month to even a few years later saying there is a problem with the tune. We would look at them and most of the time it was due to a mechanical problem. You should see the look on their faces when we would charge them for the time we spent to find or solve the problem.

yup i know exaclty what your talking about
I own and operate a lawn care service. It's pretty funny when some of the customers ask for additional (read: something not contracted for) services and I tell them there will be additional charges added. They may say "It's *only* going to take you 15 min. to do it" You know 15 min. is 15 min. I could be on the next site 15 min. into the next account.
What else gets me is some take their merry old time to pay for services rendered. Do you tell the carpet installer "I'll pay you next week cause that is when I get paid" No, you allocate money for the service before hand.
Then to top it all off. When you, the owner of the business tells them in a polite but direct manner about there negligence and ignorance they cop an attitude with you like you are the unethical person in the transaction. I bite my tongue for the most part because as they say "The customer is always right" And I'd hate to end up in the Valley Independent for choking a senior adult out:)

you all are correct.....now from a customers stand point....(and i have only ahd this happen with ford dealer and 2 local shops) they charge you for doing something twice.....take this for example....one shop wanted XX to remove each strut....then XXX for each spring. (they added the strut price into the spring price.) but i said....you already charged me from remove/install strut....so why am i being charged again for it on the spring remove/install...and they said " its by the books"
i know mechanics need to make a living and i feel bad for then...cause the dealer is making all the money. if i was paying a mechanic directly i wouldnt feel as bad.
now i am glad i got some help from a member here [insert plug for Timmy]
edit - i might get hated on by some members here (who own a business) thinking im the type wants something for free...i dont...i just want it fair....if you already removed one part to get to the next....why should i pay double for it.
I also am in my own business, bottom line is time is money. If someone wants something done and it requires doing something else first to get to what you want to do then that would be figured into the job and charged accordingly. Remeber when your in your own business we have to pay alot of overhead which no one takes into account, most people think that the money you pay for a service all goes into their pocket and really have no clue as to what it takes to keep a business running.

im not saying that at all..... here is my exact situation....guy was quoting me a charge for strut removal/install...then a price for spring install/removal. i asked why it was so high for springs and he told me "cause you ahve the time to remove the struts and re-install them" why get charged twice....
maybe he just didnt want the job so he over-quoted?
not sure what to say bout this thread, i dont discriminate,i hate everyone (execpt scs member's)lol.....
but i understand what you mean... you think you are doin someone a favor and they expect it for free... buttheads they are!!! lol

I call it "entitlement mentality". People think they're owed something, but they didn't work or pay to earn it???
I told someone just the other day, "Ya know, the whole wide world is owed to you, just because you're you!"
They did not like it at all.
I work for a big, bad, so-called evil, 30,000 employee worldwide corporation. We are the price and volume leader in our industry. We are hated by many people and companies, but without our product and service, they frankly would not survive. We have a saying at work... "You don't have to like somebody to take their money."
Keep up the good work Tim. You fixed my car once and I thought your price was very fair and you finished my car a day before you promised it.
people seem to always want something for free...unless they are the ones that have to give it up! many people don't understand what its like to earn something anymore. we are an instant gratification society...hence one big reason why debt is so high...we want it now and for cheap. there is no pride in work or in ourselves. sad really. when you find someone (like Tim) who does excellent work and is very honest and fair, (and nice) they seem to be the people others take advantage of. as nice as you want to be people, sometimes you have to look out for yourself... I think that is one reason that I like this site. I feel that it is easy to be taken advantage of when you don't know what your doing (working on the '69) but with the group that is on here you get great advice and you want to help them in return...
as stated above time is money. my brother in law recently opened up his own repair/towing place this year. i've gotten a better sense of how this stuff works.
he cuts me breaks on my tows and work done and i myself am probably one of those people that want things for free, but i am happy as could be that i am getting charged less than i would be elsewhere and getting quality work done.
i've gotten a greater sense of how a business runs and what most people don't understand is advertising, utilty bills, and tools/materials all cost money. he has thousands upon thousands of $$ in tools and tool boxes etc.
not to mention that with a rollback you pay expensive insurance+maintenance.
Tim's a wondeful person/businessman..... he does great work, calls if your vehicle needs something extra and keeps customer informed! i will be a repeater!
