Honest Valuation.....'69 GTO

I know there are some goat owners on here and other general old school car buffs......I want to know what you think the general value of this car is. I'll keep my opinions to myself and just give you facts.

This car belongs to my bro-in-law. It's a 1969 GTO, 400, 4 speed, motor is a '70. Pretty sure he is like the 3rd or 4th owner. Car had a shade over 100K miles on it. The family he got it from bought it for their son back in the mid '70's then he died and it sat in the garage for 25+yrs. Bro-in-law painted it in 2005.....he paints for a living. Since then it mostly sat out and has developed bubbles here and there....along seams and edges. It has been back in storage for the last two years. The car currently does not run but a tune up and points would likely have it going. The underside is clean, good frame, good exhaust, etc.

The interior is clean with only minimal wear. The wheels and tires currently do not match. He does have the PMD wheels for all four corners though.

If you were going to make an offer on a car like this, what would be the ballpark $$ in which you would be interest....again....I'm keeping my opinions to myself. Here is the current CL listing....I'm sure some of you saw the ad.

Yes i do love me some old school muscle. 60's and early 70's......, Yeah buddy! I consider my GN somewhat old school too. LOL

I think a fair price would be 12 to 15 grand. If it had those other things to make it more original, it would go for his asking price all day long. I think he may have a hard time selling it at that price in this economy.

I agree with the pricing, but people ARE spending money on vehicles. The biggest holdout for people is gonna be the paint job. Most guys are willing to change out an engine before they have to pay someone to repaint it. The color and stripes look hideous imo, The stripes especially, were they supposed to continue onto the hood?

There is an all original low milage 69 GTO Judge that sits in a garage (under a blanket) just up the street from me, I've seen the garage door up less than 10 times and only seen the car without the blanket once.

That seems to be a big hang up for a LOT of people that have contacted my wife about it....she did the listing for him. They've called the paint scheme everything from a clown car to a POS. Must admit that I have to agree. I have to look at it in my garage almost daily. :o At least it's on the storage side.

The scoops are gold, to match to hood and trunk stripes. But no, the stripes were not to continue over the hood, hence the gold scoops.

The '70 engine in a '69 isn't a killer, but I'm not sure that green paint belongs on anything. And those stipes look like something off a '71 Chevelle... not a GTO. The further you stray from original, the further you hurt the "GTO" value and the more you're just selling a used Pontiac.

If I were selling it, I'd get 4 decent tires on the matching PMD wheels mounted, and also get it running & driving. People get excited about things that go vroommmm and move. People get scared about things that have cobwebs.

You'd have $7500 more into this pretty easily if you were to paint it and take care of some odds and ends. I think $18-$20k would get you a decent #3 non-Ram Air, non-Judge, GTO with the non-correct drivetrain.

I would hold on the price, If it's a original sheet metal & matching numbers car your in the ball park paint is easy to fix original sheet metal and date codes are the key there's someone looking for it.

I have a 2 original 70 Goat wheels, My uncle had a 70 rag top and traded it in 73 and still had the wheels with snow tires mounted!

I completely agree with gpfarrell. A car that sits that long cannot avoid having some arthritis, and even if it runs and stops now the car will need a lot of attention in order to meet my definition of roadworthy. Sure, it is an original sheet metal GTO - but the paint color is not anything originally offered from the factory and the car needs stripped and repainted. I'd rather see / buy a really faded original paint car than a resprayed non-original paint car with issues.

That being said I think $10k is fair given the issues this car has. If I saw it in person and liked the car a little more I'd top out at around $11k. These cars are not terribly rare and only the super nice / original ones pull the big money.

10k to 12k because its a whole car. We restored one of these 5 years ago. The front bumper and right fender where big $ at the time.

Thanks for the input fellas....you are all right in line with my thinking.

He did have it on the road for a year or two after getting it painted...so the brake and everything was gone over at that time. Now that I retrace my dates, I think they bought/painted it in 2002, put the '70 motor in during 2003 (remember them working on it while I moved into my house) and the last inpection on the car was 2005. Then it was moved in and out of their old garage until I built my garage in 2010 when it was stored totally inside again.

A friend of mine had a similar situation to yours... it was a 69 gto vert but it wasn't numbers matching (scumbag told him he would rebuild the transmission, so he gave him the trans and the guy closed shop, moved out of state and declared bankruptcy IIRC... engine matches tho). Engine mildly rebuilt over stock. Interior was about the same quality. Paint/panels not as good. Sold it about 4 years ago for 11k if memory serves.
