    5.0 track times

ok please dont harass me...this is copied from another forum. i wasnt going to post here due to the abuse....but you all know the track and will be more helpful than other people.

ok first off i apologize for being a 5.0 drag racing noob but i want to know a few things before i go to the track next weekend. now i have raced a few cars at the track but never a 5.0 stang. (a few v6's and a s/c 99 GT).

i want to know if getting into the 13's is even possible or i am dreaming. i looked at www.dragtimes.com and saw several in the 13's with some similar mods. by 13's.....13.999 counts

i will be driving my 1991 GT with the following mods
    LMM springs
    KYB shocks and struts
    B&M shift kit
    2200 stall
    MAC CAI
    FMS shorty headers

    O/R H pipe
    Flowmaster catback
    boxed upper/lower control arms
    3.73 rear gear

car will have new FMS wires, plugs, MSD cap and rotor, and fresh oil change (if any of that matters)

I would say that if you can get traction those 3.73's should help you break 13's. The low stall may hurt though.

give you an idea. my tired ass notch at the time had 152k miles on the clock

355s, K&N panel filter and H pipe and flows with bald QTPs. everything else stock and it went 13.38@101.8

i say its possible but you need a much larger stall IMHO. i feel the car could of went more with more seat time. i only had the car a week and it didnt 60' good at all

How the hell did you do that? I know I am inexperienced. The best I could get from mine was a 14.20. Thats with shorties, or pipe, flows and a ram air. 3.73's. I need more practice for sure. I was also spinning at the start. I am hoping for 12.?? this summer. Doubt I'll get it but you never know.;)

i went 13.4 @ 102.2 and spun some. spinning helped the mph some

slip launch at 3500, no lift shifts at 4500 rpms and that was all she wrote. there was deff more in the car before

my tired ass notch now even with a 171k miles is still slightly impressive

those runs before was also with stock timing

As I say, I need a TON of practice. I was shifting at about 54-5500 launching at about 25 and dropping the clutch. It would hook some and them spin almost instantly. Grab second and they lit up. I guess that would account for my wonderful 2.41 60' HAHAHAHAHA

    I ran bone stock with 84k and K&n stock 3.08 gears 14.3 @ 98mph regular good years. I think it did 1.9x 60' can't remember exactly now

Pleather seats, AC ( fully loaded lx hatch ) and weighing probably 220lbs (me)
    5 speed.

    1992 LX hatch 5.slow 5 speed

Quik can drive his notch. that thing was the best bang for buck sale ever.

To put it as plain and simple as I can. With a automatic (yuk) you hit a performance barrier a lot sooner than you would with a 5-speed manual trans. 5L. As stated earlier in this thread a more aggressive converter(read: higher stall) is like mimicking a higher launch rpm with a 5-speed. With an auto it takes $$$$ in a converter and with the 5-speed it takes a little more travel on the go-pedal. In near stock form it's gonna almost be impossible to beat a 5-speed car in the e.t. department. ( with a competent driver in the 5-speed who knows where the power band is and when it diminishes)

Being efficient with the power the vehicle possesses is key to attaining low elapsed times. It does not take much to get a stock longblock 5L into the 12's. High 102 to Low 103 trap speeds coupled with a good 60' and 3 clean powershifts will net a 12 sec. timeslip. If your afraid to break it... it won't run the number. Amen.
