    Ladies Riding Motorcycles

I know there are some ladies on the board, but this is directed more to the men in the crowd...

How do you guys feel about it? Especially if the woman is your girlfriend, wife, etc...?

I personally have always found it kind of a "turn on" when I see an attractive lady on a bike, but now my current girlfriend is hell bent on getting her license and a bike and I really don't know how I feel about it. I have ridden for almost 10 years now and have logged a decent amount of miles so I have seen/experienced the goods and the bads of riding. To me, it is a great experience, but I also am well aware of the dangers associated with it. Knock on wood, the majority of my riding experiences have been enjoyable ones, but I know how quickly that could all change.

My girlfriend is an athletic girl so there is no doubt in my mind that she will be able to do, I just don't know if I want her to do it.

I also don't know what kind of bike to look for her either. She would love to have a Sportster, but I hate to see it dropped early on in the beginning stages, plus even thought its Harley's smallest bike, they are still a pretty heavy machine. Initially I suggessted a Buell Blast (as they have a great repuation for a ladies/beginners) bike but I don't want to go through the hassle of trying to sell it if/when she decides she wants to upgrade.

I've also made it clear to her that I don't want her driving until she has taken the safety course even if she understand the principles behind it and has her permit. I also asked that for atleast this first summer, that she only ride with me? I hate the thoughts of her out and about riding the countryside by herself especially at first. Am I being ridiculous with by asking that? I just want to make sure she is confident and can handle the obstacles faced while riding...

I think all of your concerns are warranted... my wife showed some interest in getting her own bike at some point, but she has backed down from that for the most part.....

I don't think you're concerns are crazy at all... I think its just the nature of how you feel about someone you love... You're willing to put yourself out there, and take the chance that you get hurt, but if SHE is the one who gets hurt, you'll never forgive yourself for letting her get on the bike by herself.

I think your concerns and your requests all make sense...

I'd never let my wife ride, and now that I have kids I'd never get on a bike for fear of something happening to me and leaving them in a single parent family. SO many clueless drivers out there - it is dangerous enough in an SUV let alone on two wheels. Even great riders can have bad things happen to them, and I think the risk is a lot higher than if you are in a car.

You've got your hands full on this one. I don't blame you for being concerened. As you said make her take the MSC first. Maybe she will change her mind after she has had the course. Do everything in your power to change her mind. If she does get one make sure it has loud pipes. Loud pipes help save lives.

My wife has talked about wanting a bike for a couple years too. Fortunatley for me she never learned to ride a peddle bike when she was a kid. I told her the only way i would ever let her on a bike on her own was if it was a Can-Am. We are actually selling our bike cause we don't ever have a chance to ride it. She was only on it with me 2 times last year.

I say get her a little bike and try to limit city riding as much as possible. Buy a 2 bike trailer, and head out to some national parks and stuff for weekend rides with her. A few weekend trips and little Saturday rides in the boonies will definitely be a lot of fun for both of you and would be a good compromise. When it's just me, the bikes, and the road I always feel safer and more in control.

Buddy has this bike that he bought for his wife last summer with around 1000 miles on it. They are now going through a divorce and I am sure he would make you a deal on it.

If she takes the 4 day safety course she can use their bike. If she doesn't like it your not stuck with an extra bike.
