"Also The twin Paxton Cobra that Cosby gave back sat here in the Burg at the Auto Palace on Balm Blvd for years."
Wow, Is this true? I used to hang out at Auto Palace sometimes back in the mid-late seventies as I had bought a new Alfa Spider from Elvidio and Mario Grande. I remember them "federalizing" Euro Countach's but never saw the Cobra!
Maybe of interest- I put a set of Euro cams in my Spider, took out 2 of the "mufflers" and cut off all but two of the fan blades leaving them 180 degrees apart (this last part per Alfa entusiast newsletter) all to up the horsepower. So I had my car in Auto Palace one day for whatever problem it had- no, it wasn't overheating - and the Alfa Rep happened to be there. Guess he sort of noticed and "heard" some things different about the car. I shortly thereafter got a letter from Alfa Romeo HQ VOIDING the powertrain warranty on the car! Wow, no way. WAY!
David Scafe had his museum on the 3rd floor Dave owned the Cosby Paxton Cobra & a few Comp cars & the CanAm Super Snake I have pix on Disc of the cars I'll post them later or tomorrow.
Elvidio lives not far from me..
I put all the pix here.

You are correct Dave sold the car it was repainted and went to Auction. The Pix i posted were taken in the late 90s. Dave moved the museum to Oakland on 5th across from the Original Hot Dog.

Map351, Mike- Clear this up for me if you would. I'm reading here:
http://www.classicandperformancecar....elbycobra.html
that the car previously at Auto Palace owned by Scaife is the car built for Carroll himself (CSX3105) and that the other (S)CSX3303 Cosby car was destroyed in a crash by a subsequent owner? Is this accurate?
I always thought that Rodman's CSX2472 Dragonsnake and Ed Lowther's SCCA A production Nat'l Champ CSX3009 (whereabouts unknown apparently) were the most famous Cobras around here. I remember very well standing beside Lowther's car at Cumberland MD ca 1966/67 when they were trying to get the engine fired up. All of a sudden the thing lit off and scared the hell out of me as I was standing right next to the side exhaust! Watched Rodman's car many, many times at different autocrosses in the area. I'm sorry I missed this one belonging to Scaife.
When I frequented Auto Palace it was one block- towards East Liberty - from Mervis Motors where I worked at the time. I do remember they moved the other direction a few blocks towards Bigelow- there was a restaraunt on one flooor I think. I was only in that shop once or twice.
Aside to Silverhatch- I guess the Alfa factory rep saw or heard all he needed to effect the voiding of the PT warranty. Don't recall ever letting anyone know the cams were swapped out- I purposely bought them from another dealer and put them in myself. Don't now remember what the warranty period was but it made no difference as the car was semi-sorted out before I got the letter. "Only" PT issues I had were a really noisy mechanical injection pump and a really, really noisy (but not all the time) limited slip that sounded like it was grinding itself to bits.

You are correct I got the numbers backwards, The Cosby car went over a cliff in Ca wile on a car show tour found parted at one time in the 70 three people claimed to own the car most of the remains went to Brian Angliss ( Autocrafters) he built a new car since he owned all the original body bucks from AC cars but SAAC wrote off the car as destroyed. The scam when like this a person worked for the Cal DOT they searched for every CSX number through NCIC the CSX number that didn't hit they issued a CA pink slip for that CSX number then built a Air Car from that number i think they built around 10 cars till some buyers found out they paid big bux for a Air Car!
There's still two slabside cobars missing in Pittsburgh never found I think one is under the Pgh zoo parking lot. Back in the 50/60/70 that was the city tow pound and if a car wasn't claimed it went to the back row once they got the unclaimed cars packed in bumper to bumper side to side the city trucks would haul sludge from the sewage treatment plant and cover the cars when it dried it was like cement, this was the midnight auto parts! I remember seeing 55/57 Birds, Mustangs, just about every car you could think of I remember seeing sports cars but had no clue what they were There's thousands of cars under that parking lot!
Joe's (Rodman) Dragon snake was a continuation car not one of the originals but it was the Apollo hill climb champ, I know Joe, He worked for Westinghouse wile in Ca back in the 70s he found a Cobra chassis in a junk yard paid 250.00 Bux I forget what # the car was he had 3 or 4 at one time back in the 80s when they were cheap! I passed on a 427 street car for 50K and a CS for 80K!
Joe's ( Green) Dragonsnake SAAC10

Mike- You are a man with patience. I went thru your restoration photos. Beautiful job on #2575! I once passed on a mint 20K mi 4sp 70 Hemi Roadrunner for $2500 in 1976, so don't feel too bad about the other Cobras you passed on. After all these used high performance cars were a dime a dozen back when ...
Here's more on Rodman's CSX2472 Cobra- http://www.csx2019.com/reg2472.html
Ended up sold at RM auctions in 2006 for $695K. Here's what it looks like today after resto in California- [ame="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jacksnell707/3675533604/"]1965 Shelby Cobra 289 CSX 2472 5 | Flickr - Photo Sharing![/ame]
I found something interesting. After seeing that GT40 in one of your photos I am reminded of one of these getting thoroughly trounced at Cumberland by a Porsche Carrerra 6. It might have been the same day I previously mentioned. Of course this was a short airport course not favoring the GT40. But I wanted to make sure I had the Porsche model name right and I Googled the Carrera 6 name. Wonder of wonders, this was owned and driven by the same Ed Hugas that sold the CSX2472 car originally out of Continental Motors on West Liberty Ave. But wait, there's more. On this page of the Post Gazette from May 18, 1966 you can note a 2500 mile 1965 Cobra for sale with full race 289, chrome roll bar, Goodyear Blue Streaks, never raced or abused (!) for $6000. In the following link the Hugas ad is in the bottom right of the page, the Cobra for sale is just to the top right of the Baierl ad under Sports and Foreign cars-

PS- I'm going digging, what time does the Zoo close ...

I talked to Joe a few days after the Auction he had a permanent grin! Me & Fran Kress used to travel everywhere looking for Cobras & Shelby's I have a lot of pix of our travels, one weekend we went to look at a Slabside in Dayton price was 22K it was a driver needed some work but all original we passed on that one the guy selling the Cobra owned 3 McDonald's & had 2 buildings full of every Hipo Ford ever made, he had 5 Cobras,GT-40, Boss's 02 & 9 Pantera, Mangusta, Thunder Bolts, Brand new Cammers on the shipping crates just endless expensive stuff! That same weekend we kept heading west to Chicago to looks at the 427 SC asking price 80K passed on that one too the same car sold a few years ago for 900K! I have pix I'll scan them and post later.
The GT-40 (1054) That Kress owns Joe Rodman found it, the owner worked for Westinghouse in Monroeville he drove the GT-40 for years everyday to work after he retired he parked the car Kress found out where the car was parked and bought the car for 75K! Turns out it was a Gulf car no race history just a team warm up car still a Real GT-40 chassis # 1054 the car was very rusty it almost burnt to the ground one night in Aspinwall Gulf station the rockers were rusted and ripped one of the fuel bladders fuel everywhere, The car was sent back to England to have the Monocoque rockers rebuilt.
Lotta years tracking down Aluminum rockets!

Another one in Conn. can't remember the chassis # I'll look on the pic.

More awesome stories guys! Damn it is a small world! The guy who built the engine in my '66 is buddies with Fran. The Aviad oil pan on my motor came from a bulk purchase that Fran made back in the day.
Is Fran's GT-40 repaired now? I thought it got hit in the rear at BeaveRun a few years ago at the PVGP vintage races? I wasn't there the day it happened, but remember hearing about it. That car is beyond cool, but my favorite car that he has owned ( that I know of ) has to be the '65 R-model. What did they make - like 34 or 36 of them? That car made the hair stand up on the back of my neck just looking at it!

The GT-40 that had the accident at Beaver run was a Yellow J car (427 sold went to Japan) that car was built by Holman & Moody out of spare parts no chassis number but with all the good parts! When I was doing Frans cars back in the 80s Fran wanted me to go in on buying the R car you mentioned it was Mark Donohue R 65 Shelby team car another one I passed on Fran sold/traded the car in a GN & 427 Vette & parts + cash around 225,000 deal. Fran drove that car on the street you could hear him 3 block away!
