Does a catalytic converter only work with an air pump going to it? Meaning if I pull off my h pipe and install a catted h only, no sensors, air tube, etc., will it get rid of some fumes? Car has a carb and an aggressive cam and the fumes are bad.

Cat's can work without air injection, however it's sometimes not as easy as just bolting them on.

If it's a carb running rich, you are going to have issues. Between the raw gas and the "rich" condition dropping the exhausr temp, the cats might never work.

A good walk through the carb tuning would be my starting point.
