Look at options for new DD

If someone has any experience/opinions or knows someone who has experience with the following, please let me know...

I LOVE my Lexus (i've kept it for 2 years, which is a LONG time for me) - but the wife and I started throwing around the idea of getting an SUV (a family is in the future)... So, I've looked at my options, without downgrading in terms of luxury... There's ONE car in the list below, even though i said we were looking at SUV's... Its there because I think its an AWESOME car, and it would be newer than my current Lexus, without leaving out any class...

I"m not looking to add a payment (or not much of one), thus the model years i've restricted myself to

    2004-2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
    2006-2007 Range Rover Sport Supercharged
    2006-2007 BMW X5
    2009 Jaguar XF Supercharged

Over the next several weeks my wife and I will be driving each one of these to see what we think, so my current thoughts are BEFORE driving anything - my thoughts:
    - I love the Cayenne - its a decent looking exterior, but the interior is phenomenal! From everything i read, its a 5000lb sports car, and it lives up to the Porsche badge... Its crazy that a car that was $100K+ new has lost so much value, but i don't think it could loose much more... The only thing i don't like is I would likely end up with an '04 or an '05.. not sure I wanna go with an older car, regardless of the fact that it was over $100K new
    - I'm not a fan of the Range Rover, but my wife is in love with it... I told her that I would take one for a drive, and maybe it would convince me... i read really good things about it online... its still slow as balls, even supercharged
    - The Bimmer is a sweet ride, but i'm not a fan only because its that car that everybody's neighbor has...
    - I LOVE the looks of the Jag, and the interior is incredible... yes, its not an SUV, but its a car that i've had my eyes on for a couple years and thought "man i'd love to have one of those!" I've read a lot of horror about this car and some of its electrical issues, but that's where buying a used car might be a huge advantage - someone else has already had to fix those headaches! Plus, its the only one of the above that would represent getting a NEWER car, which is never a bad move... despite some of the small issues i'm hearing about, people seem to still love the car.. and if i still had it once we had a child, it would probably fit a car seat (which is something our Lexus won't do, even though its a sedan - just too small of a back seat)

Anyone have any experience with these, or know someone who has? or have any opinions? I know that Bo (MBH) has a Jag, and i've already PM'd him about it....

    Thanks in advance...

I would go with the RR Sport. I love those things. I was thinking about buying one, but getting 12 mpg out of a daily driver just doesn't make sense for me right now.

You will not like the Land rover. I drove and rode in a NA version and i did not like it. I think it looks awesome and thought about even getting one (a black one up here for cheap), but I didnt want another black suv and the fact that I just didnt like the NA one enough to take a chance on a S/c one.

I know its not on your list, but may think about putting it on there. The Audi Q5. I also test drove one of these and feel in love with it. I like the interior and the exterior is better than the Porsche for me.

I am a HUGE porsche fan and out of your list this is the one that would be my choice. I think the turbo version looks alot better than NA version. The interior is also a very good point, but the fact of the value of them now is what is shocking because there has to be a reason it has dropped so much, Ya know? That just makes me nervous cause I know your like me and like to switch up vehicles alot. I havent driven on yet, but based on specs and styling out of your list this would be my choice.

The bmw x5 leaves alot on the table. If you put the x5m on the list instead I think that would be a better competitor against the s/c land rover and turbo porsche.

If mpg is not a real huge factor which it doesnt seem like it is with the sc land rover and turbo porsche being on the list. Really think about a Jeep Srt-8. Yes its a Jeep, but its not a Jeep at the same time. THe interior will rival and match those listed as well as options and they hold there value the same if not better than the ones you listed.

Jag I have no idea about so no opinion on that.

I personally would go with the cayenne personally. IMO...

-RR S/C has become the new Escalade in terms of "everybody has one". I see multiples of them on a daily basis and MPG is lacking.

-The X5 doesn't have anything exceptional about and I feel you would get bored very quick with it.

-The XF S/C may be really nice but I again, feel you would be negating the point of getting a new vehicle (at least for the purpose of why you started looking). Also like you stated, the electrical issues may be a headache for you.

**PM MBH (Bo) on here about the XF. I believe he now has one as a DD, not sure if it's the S/C model or not.**

Bish, have you considered the X5 M series?

They seem to be far and few, at least around here. They also have a great stance from the factory with the offset of the M wheels. I believe these ones are only 2010+ but have the twin turbo 4.4L with over 550bhp.

IIRC, they're is also a 09+ X6 M which is a little smaller in size.

You mentioned a family in the future, not sure if you have any car seat experience. If not...get ready for a PIA shopping for one, installing it and riding with it (seats that is, if you're shopping for babies you're doing it wrong).

I'm 6'7" and my wife is 6', for us we need to ride with the seat all the way back. For the 1st yr you must put the seat in rear facing and it's recommended to keep it that way for as long as you can. Our daughter stayed rear facing until she was 15 months, she's a string bean and that's as long as she could make it until we had no choice to flip it front facing. Rear facing seats take a up a HUGE amount of room. For reference, in the Mustang the passenger seat was almost all the way forward and the seat back almost vertical. When we started looking for a new truck we took a seat with us and just set in the back.

Now she's 17 months and she can already kick the seat back in our super crew which has huge rear seat room, until you put a car seat back there. If you're planning to keep it awhile and use it for baby haulin, think ahead before you fall in love with something and have to trade it for something with more room.

I disagree with you here... i did have the Jeep in my list originally, but despite liking the exterior look, my wife doesn't like it... and the interior is where it falls short to me... it has aboslutely nothing on the rest of the cars mentioned...

As far as the Q5, it is in consideration, even though i didn't put it up there... we will be driving a Q5 and a Q7 both in the upcoming weeks... They don't have the performance factor of the others, but the Q7 has some AWESOME features... my only issue with the Audi is the same as with the BMW... there's just so many of them out there, b/c they're the first companies people go to when looking at luxury cars.. I considered the AMG mercedes as well, but the looks just don't do it for me, even though the interior is the best of the bunch...

As for the value of the Porsche - it certainly raises an eyebrow... but part of me wonders if its just because its so overpriced from the start.... If you've got a 4 year old Cayenne that's still more expensive than a brand new Lexus/Audi/BMW/etc., i don't know that you'll even consider it... its just a thought, as i don't know why its dropped in value so fast - looking at reliability online, it seems to be a well built car...

Bish, of the four I would go with the Bimmer or Porsche. I would stay away from the RR. Over the years I've heard nothing but problems with the RR. I have a buddy that his fiancé has an 09 and it's in the shop constantly. I know I don't have to tell ya that the maintenance on all of them is Boo Koo bucks for service.

The M series SUV's did interest me, but they're still too expensive... a quick search on AutoTrader shows that there's not a single one under 50K... not looking to spend that much right now

to Scoprio - this thought came about because we may have a family in the next 2 years, but there's also a distinct possibility that whatever i get will not be a car that gets a car seat... keeping my Lexus for 2 years is the longest i've kept a car since i graduated college.

in my mind, i've narrowed it down to the Porsche and the Jaguar...... but i'm trying to stay open for my wife's sake... she's the one who will drive it the most

SO the decision might be whether we want a SUV or not..... that's why we started looking, so that might be the obvious choice - but like i said - for years, on the rare occasion that i've seen a XF, i've wished i had one.. so its tough to pass on the opportunity... then again, hard to pass on opportunity to get a Porsche Cayenne too... just feels a little weird going to an OLDER car

well, that ones a bit newer than what i'm considering, but they still look MOSTLY the same....

and yes, the Porsche has an insane number of things standard.. and the fact is, the Cayenne Turbo buyer is probably going to be paying for most of the options.... the airbag suspension, auto-leveling, the interior is decked -sometimes with 4 zone climate control, etc - the list goes on and on....

the standard list on the Jag is impressive as well...

For the M5, there are very few in the price range i'm looking at.... and i've never been a huge fan of BMW's... i just think the interiors are average at best... i only included the X5 to give it a fair chance...

The M series cars are definitely not to be ignored though.... still like the looks of the Jag better.... and performance isnt' necessarily something i'm set on with this car... it'll be my wife's to drive... the M will hold value better that's for sure

Does anyone know anything about the reliability of a BMW M6??

I've got a bead on a M6, and its a gorgeous car - not to mention a 500hp V10... my biggest concern is around the SMG transmission... not sure what kind of cost there is on a clutch change, how long they last, and how reliable the v10 is....

If chances are that it will be a nightmare and cost me a fortune throughout 2 years of ownership, i'll pass on it...
