They were more common than that. They're just rare today. They used the Getrag 282 5-speed transmission.

The LQ1 had potential to be a potent engine. Originally it made 280 HP, but they had to retard it down to 210 because there was no automatic front wheel drive tranny that could handle that kind of power. So to keep costs down, they used the transmission from the supercharged pontiacs for the Z-34 instead of building one.
