anybody ever vinyl wrap their car?

    Hi guys,

long time no see. :o Hope everybody is doing well

Anywho... I was wondering if anybody on here had any experience with vinyl wrapping a car? Thinking of wrapping my car, but one of the big concerns I have is what happens to the paint after the removal of the wrap. Everybody always says that it keeps the paint mint underneith, but I feel like that's just everybody repeating an internet legend rather than having any experience with it. I don't want to wrap my car and damage my paint.

With that said, if I wrap it, I'm going to do it myself so I know it's my own work and what's underneath the wrap and that I'm not going to get knife cuts into my paint or that any adhesive promotor will be used, etc.

    Thoughts? Advice?

lol Nate!!! You should look up "matte azure blue metallic," I have a feeling you'll like it

Jim - I always care - but I probably care a little bit extra here, so I want to make sure nothing adverse will happen to the paint when I take it off. That's good to know that nothing happened with those vans though, because I know that everybody says that they'll be like new underneath but people typically take the wrap off and sell/trade the car (or never take it off at all). Do you have any idea what type of material they used on the vans?

That's awesome, really good to hear. This is exactly what I'm hoping to hear

aww hell no haha I've done it before on the grills of 2 of my past cars, but I wouldn't want to do it on a big flat surface. Might look OK in pictures, but there will be minor differences in the thickness. Plus I don't care what the internet says, that stuff can be a PITA to get out of tight cracks with any overspray (since it won't be very thick, you can't peel it at all)

What made you decide against wrapping your car?

Definitely a bad ass color. I know you love jet stream blue! Doesn't look so good on a porsche though, too much of a bubble I guess. Maybe it's the pictures, or maybe it's because this particular 996 would be boring no matter what color paint it had lol but it makes me think that's not a good idea on a 996

Looks like bright atlantic blue with a matte finish on it. If/when I go through with this, I'll let you know how much I hated wrapping it

I'm between doing a dark grey gloss (similar to a GT3 RS in "grey black" or "grigio medio" or "grigio telesto") and a matte grey metallic FWIW

    i love the matte blue.

The vinyl they used was probably the cheapest stuff the got quoted for and it didnt hurt the paint a bit.

I know I've saw a ton of cool colors. It gives you a 2 for 1 really. A cool color you'll like and paint protection!

Yeah, a BAB terminator would be awesome and this seems like an easy way to accomplish that. Definitely let us know how it works out. I'd probably do it myself as well cause I'm too cheap to pay someone to do it.

I think both of those look pretty good. I'd probably go with the matte grey personally. I know you're kind of looking to be subtle though so the gloss grey would probably be the better choice for that.

For sure. I had never really thought about it before now. Seems like a pretty cool option. I wouldn't do it if I liked the color of my car, but I'm not a big fan of silver. Just happened to get a good deal on a silver car so that's what I'm stuck with unless I decide to go this route. I guess the job would be a little easier on a vert since I wouldn't have to worry about the roof or sail panels.

If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it's marketed right, you'll buy it. But if it's real, you'll feel it. IG: @donuttrump

I like the dark grey gloss you picked out. I'm not a fan of Cornflower Blue, I mean Azure Blue or Grabber Blue.

When "the tint guy" did my car I asked him about the car wraps. He actually does them as well if you ran into any issues with it.

There was a chrome vette on you tube that was wrapped....thing looked amazing imo. Think it was a c6.

I wrap cars for my job, I work at Endagraph if you want to look up the stuff we do. Wrapping a car with vinyl will pretect the paint for the most part if good vinyl is used, I prefer 180C with Laminate. This material is usually around 5-9 dollars a square foot depending on design, but also when a car is wrapped we use an adhesive around some of the edges that would most likely peel up, it's called primer and this won't hurt the vehicle either it's just a glue that wipes off with alcohol. Good vinyl is warrantied for 7 years by most companies but after 4 years it will become hard to remove and the longer you have on the more risk you take of the sun cracking the decal up, mainly on hoods and roofs.

If the paint isn't original or isn't a good paint job then you do run the risk of the decal pulling the paint up. To remove decal you have to heat it up but not to hot and not to cold and it will pull off real easy.
