    Ford Racing or Exedy Clutch?

I'm going to be rebuilding my T-5 World Class trans (out of a 93) in my 87 GT soon. I've been running the Ford Motorsport (Racing) clutch for years now with no issue. Probably <5k on the clutch.

I figured that since I'll be in there that I should replace the clutch, pressure plate and fly wheel. I've been seeing American Muscle pushing these Exedy clutches and I'm not familiar with them. Does anyone here have any experience with them and how they might compare to the Ford Racing setup? The car is basically stock with the typical bolt-ons. Nothing major at all so I don't need a real heavy duty clutch. Let me know what you think...

    Thanks!

I don't have any use with one, and I'm in limbo with you about a new clutch as well. I've read on a few other forums that the Exedy clutches hold up extremely well and the pedal feel is lighter than stock, but grabs extremely well. Its hard because you don't want to switch from what works! Hopefully others get in on it, but I haven't actually heard anything bad about them yet

The last FoMoCo plate I had is hanging on the garage wall reminding me not to buy another one. It came apart in the water box @ about 4000rpm. good think I had a Lakewood housing. That was over 40 yrs. ago so just maybe they have improved.

If it still works, why change? I suspect if you are easy on clutches you arent at mid life of that clutch unless you plan to turn up the power or abuse ;)

If you have the KinG Cobra clutch package, those things was great, and no longer avaialble ... Several (UPR and LateModel Restoration) sell a copy of it, but it's not the same as the original.

In general, if you search arounf you are going ot find as many people that love a clutch and as many that hate them. So much personal preference in feel, power holding, driving styles, etc that make it all a crap shoot.

I wouldn't say I'm easy on it (hence the trans needing rebuilt ;) ) but the clutch has been fine...Still pulls hard and grabs 2nd nicely! :D I guess I don't want to regret not putting a fresh clutch setup in it since I'll have the trans out. I could have a look at it while it's out and make a decision then...

    Maybe a bit! ;)

As I mentioned, this clutch has been in there since the late 90's but I barely put miles on the car so it essentially should be in "almost new" condition. We'll see...

Thanks again for the input folks!

So the King Cobra's that UPR sell aren't that great? Would you advise going with an Exedy over the King Cobra? I've been waiting for someone to chime in to tell me something of this nature lol

No , not saying good or bad, just that the original king cobra isn't made so anything else is different. No personal experience but I did hear good feedback on the UPR kit

Thanks Bob, cause I seriously considered buying the UPR kit, but I was worried and didn't want to get something that wasn't good!

I know it's not a Mustang, but I run an Exedy in my turbo Focus and it has been great. It is a 3-puck with a lightweight flywheel and holds 250 ft/lb torque very well.

That being said, the stock clutch in my '03 Mach 1 was amazing. It held for 6K+ RPM side-steps and powershifting over and over again. It would get hot if I hot-lapped a few times, but was fine after it cooled down.
