    spark plug blowout?

Is this common on the 4.6? I thought it was only the 5.4 just curious because i changed the spark plugs in my car today and the number 3 cylinder had one of those heli-coils on the plug threads.
Also the number 4 cylinder plug looked like it wasnt firing it was all soaked in gas and oil. No check engine light or anything but the car is running terrible theres a decent miss at idle. Grrr i just want to enjoy this car and not have to go back to the dealer.

Yes. This happened to me two summers ago. If I remember right Ford didn't put enough threads in it. Fairly common, if one was already heli coiled then the PO must of had one blow out.

IMO if you torque the plugs to the factory specs and don't periodically maintain the spec this is going to happen and will keep happening. I torque most spark plugs to 20 - 25 ft-lb.

Yeah, I go over mine about once a month during the summer.

I've never torqued mine though, always hand tight snug.

I know in 03-04 cobra land its common. Most 03 cars had the crappy 4 thread heads. Late 03 and all 04 cars got the I think its 9 thread heads. I got lucky my late 03 is 9 thread. I also put a tiny bit on antiseize on mine when I wind them in. I also just do hand snug, Always have on all cars and never had an issue.

Yea not sure what heads are on mine but I've already got a time sert in mine. Prob will pop the covers and just make sure they're still tight. When the car blew the plug out, some of the others were only hand tight to pull out.

If you take one out. Take a thin piece of metal, like a coat hanger. Put alil tip on one end and insert it in the hole. Slowly pull it out and you will fill it bump over the thread ridges. Easiest way to find out what thread heads ya have. Or if by chance the owner before you had revised heads put on it

It's a spark plug not an oil filter!

    lol that is true john.

has anyone ever had problems with the number 4 spark plug getting wet?
for some reason #3and#4 are the only 2 cylinders that those those accel cop's makes me think that someone was trying to cover up something :(

reason i say is because the number 4 plug wasnt firing at all. the part of the plug that goes into the cylinder portion, like the ceramic and where it fires was soaked in what looked like a gas/oil substance... the ignition coil boot was submerged in antifreeze, i think i figured that out because that heater hose that goes onto the intake manifold right near cylinder 4 needed the clamp tightened up because the hose was leaking and going right into the plug well.

i clean the coil up but its running like shit :( after putting new plugs in, hard to start has a horrible miss at idle i used motorcraft plugs. Im going to re-pull the number 4 plug and make sure its firing.

I would recomend to do a compression test on that cylinder.

Are you running all Accel COP's? I would go back to using the Motorcraft COPs to be honest. One thing that is coming up in my mind to consider is if you possibly busted your intake manifold gasket or if the intake manifold is cracked?

Good Good.. If you have the resources available, I would run all the same, rather than 6 of one and 2 of another..
