Neither are necessary. Slots are useful for keeping the pads clean on a rally car for instance, but with pad technology what it is they really aren't useful for anything, but they don't typically break like drilled junk does. Slots won't hurt, but at least 95% of cars you see at a road course run blanks.
This is what happened after about 6 laps with drilled garbage on the REAR of my Z06 (car came with them). I instantly replaced the fronts with NAPA blanks, but was too cheap to replace the rear thinking they would be OK. Sounded like something in the rear suspension broke, and almost ate the tire wall when the tire continued to try to lock up with any application of the brakes (time trial, was trying to finish the last hot lap).
