I was kind of hoping for Tyler Eifert in the 1st round. He and Heath Miller would have been an awesome tandem, but I'm still happy with Jarvis Jones. They really didn’t have a choice considering James Harrison’s departure. I thought for sure that either the Jets or Saints were going to take him, so I’m glad that he fell to #17… 28 sacks in 26 games- pretty impressive.
I liked Eddie Lacy and thought Le’Veon Jones was reaching a little, but apparently the Steelers had him rated as the #1 back. He has been compared to Eddie George with his physical traits, but I’ll wait a little longer before making that comparison. A good choice nonetheless and fills a big hole.
Markus Weaton in the 3rd was another need position. While not as fast as Mike Wallace, he can still stretch the field.
The 4th round was the most intriguing. I really liked the decision to move up and get Shamarko Thomas. Not a big safety, but he is fast and hits hard. They can also use him as FS/CB in different packages. Giving up a 3rd round to Cleveland isn’t as bad as it seems because they will get 2 compensatory 3rd round picks next year due to Mike Wallace and Keenan Lewis signing elseswhere. I also liked them selecting Landry Jones… It looks like the end for Charlie Batch. While I like Charlie, and he did beat the Ravens last year, I feel a little better with our back-up QBs now in the event that Ben goes down… and he probably will.
Terry Hawthorne is a big and fast CB prospect… Justin Brown should be a big target for Ben. The 2 Williams conclude the draft and further address needs...
Overall, I like the draft selections. They definitely filled some critical voids. Hopefully 1 or 2 of them will start, and if the O-Line can stay healthy… and Heath Miller comes back strong… and Troy Polamalu can play 14+ games… and Steve Mclendon continues to improve... and LaMarr Woodley starts earning his pay... and… and..., then the Steelers should have a decent year.
2013 Draft- "A"
