    Used car.....a fluke??

Last week we had a 2001 Subrau Outback wagon in the garage from a local car dealer. It's got the 4 cylinder, auto and most option. Dark blue/tan w/ grey interior. We had some rust issues to clean up on it. Overall the car is in super shape underneath and inside. The carsat in the garage for a week adn never left a single drop of anything on the floor. It runs better and drives tighter than my 2004 Legacy Sedan. It's a one owner car. I'm thinking of buying it for $2K. The issue that has me hesitating....it has 199k miles on it. Hopefully it's no fluke to be driving so nice now only to blow up next week. My Legacy only has 128k on it. I'm not sure what to do........

I'd be more concerned with the tranny.

My Aunt has a 2001 Legacy LLBean wagon and she is having a bunch of issues with it right now. Nice riding car but a pain in the butt. It only has 88k miles on it. O2 sensor issues - common with the Subies - passing emissions can be a yearly struggle. Rad is going bad. Several oil leaks. I'm not a fan of Subies - never heard any good things about them from a reliability standpoint.

Don't the NA 2.5s have major head gasket issues?

Subaru motors will run forever. The body usually rusts out before the motor dies from my experience.

And x2 on the o2 sensor thing. Mine is having that issue

The head gasket issues depend on the year. My 2004 has a leaky head gasket.

My in-laws car has the O2 sensor issue but for my area that will not affect inspection.

    Maybe I should pass.......

I've had 2 Legacy Gt's (05 and 08)and haven't had a problem with either one. My 08 has 95,000 miles on it and runs flawless.

no idea when the last time any major service was done on it? Is the price flexible? For me, the test would be making it through the summer. If it does and no issues, Id probably keep it. Otherwise I would make a minimal investment so that it is passable and disclose what you did to the next buyer. When the fall comes and people are looking to pick up AWD winter beaters you could probably get what you paid anyway.

I dont have enough details to make a decision, but if the body is flawless and the suspension is in good shape it would be a tough decision for me.

Other than the usual rust (behind the wheel wells and front of the hood) the body is clean. Had it on the rack and the it appears to have never been hit in the front or back. Underneath is very clean and dry. The usual suspects in the suspension have been replaced along with the exhaust. The interior is also great. Not sure if I mentioned it or not but it's a one owner car.

The wife just went to the dealer to do the paperwork. I figured "what the hell" and going to give it a shot.

Hope it works out for you Dan. My Aunt's car has the 6-cylinder in it - from what I have heard, the LLBean models all came with the "big" motor. Decent power but it sucks on gas.

I hear ya on the interior - the leather seems to be good quality and the layout is nice.

So...are you calling it the "Shaggin' Wagon"??

Talked to the prior owner today. The car has had the head gaskets done, timing belt, water pump and several suspension parts replaced. Her complaint was the rust but after 200K miles it served her well. All news I'm glad to hear.

For $2000..I'd drive that thing til the wheels fell off. I wouldn't let the miles bother you for that price.
