    tipping

ok so I know 15% is customary, but 30% is b.s. Backstory, went to dinner, sat at the bar and ordered appetizers and drinks came to $20. Then decided to eat dinner they gave us a table ordered more food, bill total was $80.12. Gave the waitress $100, sat there 15 minutes no change. Finally waitress asked us if we wanted anything else, I advised my change. She kinda looked shocked then went and got it. Pissed I left $10. Is it now customary for waitresses to assume any cash leftover is theirs?

I dont think there ever should be an assumption on that.

When I pay cash, I like to get my change back, then leave the tip. Wifey and I play a game based on the bill total, and how much cash we gave them, how the change will come back. In your case, I would of predicted a 10 and the rest ones if she was confident in good service, or two 5's and the rest ones if stuff was slow to come :D The 10 would be locked in then you could fiddle with the ones to make the tip ;)

We had an issue once at a place, service was lousy, absolutely lousy. I am generally a good tipper because i know they work hard and it's their income. In this case she was playing grab ass with some friends and everything was slow, food came after sitting, and worst yet my beer sat empty several times :( To make a point, I left a $2 tip on a ~$60 bill, I feel it's more a statement to leave a bad tip than none since they see it versus just thinking you are a cheap ass. ... the next day wifey told me they overcharged our card. They added exactly 15% on the bill. Called the manager, he gave me some shit about being usual to add the tip, I told him I left a cash tip fitting of his employee and level of service, and he removed the charge. Sent us a voucher for free shit, but I never go back, too many other choices to go places that piss me off. It's rare I dont tip at least 15% and anything like good service gets 20%

She should of asked if you wanted change, period. It's hard to get a good waiter/waitress anymore it seems.

Just cuz I can't resist myself, that would have been a 25% tip, not 30%... :p

regardless, i agree with all of the above - though, i haven't run into this issue at all... then again, i don't carry cash, and pay for pretty much everything with my card.

Ur right, but I subtracted the bar portion being the waitress didn't actually get it for us.

My wife used to be a waitress a LONG time ago so I always give a nice tip - around 20% - unless the service really sucks. And when it sucks, I let the waitress/waiter know whatever problems we have had, so when they do get their tip of, say, $2 or $1 or... even $0.01 on a few occasions, hopefully she/he puts 2 and 2 together and realizes why the tip sucked...because the service sucked!

I hate when they ask me if I want my change. I feel like if I say YES I'm a cheap-azz, and I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Paying the check is a business transaction with the resturant, the waitor or waitress should give you every penny back and a thank-you as well.

Then I'll tip them, and it's usually 20%, more if they are extra friendly. But if you make me wait 10 minutes for my change while my 9, 7, and 4 year old sons are squirming, the tip shrinks quickly!

A good waiter/waitress will say "I'll be right back with your change" leaving it open for the customer to say something if they want them to keep the change.

The automatically included tip irritates me... I was at a place a few years back, party of 8, they automatically added the tip, 18 or 20%. The waitress essentially ignored us after dinner, even though we needed refills, coffee, etc.
