Trailer spare tire and rim - 6-lug 15 inch

Hey guys - I need a 6-lug 15 inch spare rim and tire for my car trailer. Are there any good trailer stores in the area? The big box stores only seem to carry the smaller diameter, light-duty stuff. Addresses and phone numbers would be greatly appreciated. I'm in Moon Twp near the airport, so the closer to me the better. Thanks!!

Ron, make sure you get trailer-specific stuff. I've been reading lots about trailer wheels & tires and the amount I'm learning is borderline painful.

If you're towing a 3500lb Mustang locally, you might be able to get away with most anything. But a heavily-loaded tandem axle car trailer evidently puts considerible stress on the wheels when the tires "skid" sideways during tight turns. Additionally, if you have a blow-out some say that both tires on that side should be changed because as soon as the one tire blew the other was immediately overloaded and should be prone to fail shortly.

    Ugh.

Oh, and watch your date codes. And if you ever want to read about other people's problems, Google "Goodyear Marathon failure"!

    Good luck!

    Trailer Wheels

Ron, Trailer sales off I-79 Houston exit is where I bought my trailer and spare wheels/tires. Craig is a good guy. I have an extra mounting bracket for a spare if you need it also. Larry

Thanks Greg - good advice for sure! I'm definitely getting trailer specific stuff. The tires on the trailer are only a few years old and are trailer-specific. I also have heard of passenger car tires delaminating ( plies separating ) and then blowing out when used on trailers for the reason you mentioned. Today the truck is at U-Haul having a brake controller installed along with the 7-pin harness. Next I will be adding some D-ring tie downs and getting the trailer inspected. After that I will be seeing how I can get the '66 up on the trailer. I'm thinking the headers might be a tad low and scrape, so I might have to install some 2x12" boards on the deck for added ground clearance.

Hey Larry - thanks for the information. I saw that Harbor Freight has a spare mounting bracket for about $13 but I don't know if it will work on a 6-lug wheel. Would yours? Any chance you have a link ( and maybe a photo ) to the kind you have so I could see if it would work on my trailer? Thanks again for the help. I'm looking forward to using this trailer!

Another option is Jones RV Sales & Service in 84. Bob also sells race car trailers, and is a racer, so he may have a spare wheel around, or could get one for you, along with a tire. www.jonesrv.com

Spend the money on good straps also!! Watch the length between the ratchet and the hook. The shorter the better.

Thanks Dan - keep the tips coming! I just picked up the truck from UHaul. They installed the brake controller and the 7-pin plug and now everything works perfectly. The trailer came with some straps that look to be in very good condition, but I still will have them checked out. Harbor Freight has a 3000 lb winch on sale for $99...I'm wondering if that might be enough to do the job.

I have a Superwinch that I made a bracket to slide it into a truck hitch. After I got the trailer I fabbed a rig to mount it to the front of the trailer. Then I can remove it as and remount as needed.

I had the brake controller installed in the truck last week. Picked up a spare tire and rim at Toms Trailer in Hickory on Saturday, and ordered some axle straps with sleeves. Got the trailer inspected today and put the GT on it. The 4 foot ramps are too steep ( undercarriage scrapes the trailer ) so I'm looking to get some longer ones. Borrowed a buddy's ramps - 6.5 feet long - and had a ton of clearance using those. Shopping for a set of them now. The bottom of the doors didn't clear the trailer fenders, so I bought some 2x12's and bolted them to the trailer deck and now the doors open freely on the trailer. Now it is time to tuck the trailer in a garage before the weather takes a dump this week...

Glad you are getting squared away Ron....I was interested in Bill's trailer as well but it just wasn't quite big enough for me...I ended up buying a trailer myself 2 weeks ago....18' 10,400lb.

You got a smokin deal on a nice car hauler....

The wood deck is definately the way to go.

EDIT: Btw if you are going to get a winch do what Dan suggested and mount it to a hitch mount and then get a receiver mount and mount that to the trailer...then you can use the winch on your truck or the trailer since it is mobile and you have a receiver on both. You can run the power wires from your battery and keep them tucked up somewhere in the back with a 6' pig tail for use on when the winch is on the trailer or on the truck.

Ron this is the winch I have inside my enclosed trailer. Can't beat this baby for the $. Comes with a free cover also. http://www.4wheelparts.com/Winches-W..._PQ=Smittybilt

Post current pics of trailer, I'd like to see the new deck pieces bolted on.

You have to remember that trailers are rated by GVWR - if your trailer is 7k lbs and weighs 2000, you can legally only haul 5k....most newer full size trucks are all over that. 7k # auto haulers are really just car haulers.

I figured I will use mine to haul full size trucks and the occasional equipment...I can only haul 8100 on mine.

For a winch, check the manufacturers specs on pulling force with a full drum.....htey may rate it at an empty drum which provides the most pulling force...

I have power wires on the winch that I just run up to the truck battery as needed. Since I rarely use it, the wires are always in good shape tucked away in the box with the winch and not waiting to corrode or have a ground fail.
