Any Subaru guru's in here?? Trans issues.

On Thursday night my wife's 2001 Outback wagon puked (4 cyl, auto). The transmission has a nasty sound coming from it that sounds like a blown ring gear in a RWD car....an repeatable "bang" as if the pinion would ride the ring gear then skip a few teeth and catch again. A few days before it happened she told me of a "burning" smell. I checked it out and nothing appeared obviously bad. Then right before it happened (minutes via phone) she complained about it not shifting into 4th gear. I put it on the rack, had her put the car in gear........bang........bang.......bang.....coming directly from the transmission. I held each wheel individually to see if I could isolate it to a certain axle.......still does it.

I have a short video of it that records the sound very well but I can't post it.

I've been searching around online for any tranny problems that someone would describe sounds like my issue but nothing is coming up.

The car has 210K miles on it. Found a trans at Stoystown Auto for $850 but I'm not thinking I want to drop that kind of coin on this car.

    Any ideas?

The parts and pieces inside are much cheaper...with noises like that the problem would have to be obvious once u opened up the trans.

Thanks to badstanglx for finding me a trans for half of what Stoystown wanted. Dropped the old one this afternoon and picking up a used one this week. Should have it back together by the weekend.

Sounds like what happened to my Avenger Dan. My transmission ended up exploding and the spider gears were completely fried. When I put it in neutral to push it out of the way in the driveway, it would start to lock up and you could hear the banging. The gears/lines probably are completely shredded, similar to what happened to mine. Good luck with the new transmission. At least you got 210k out of it!

Yah....at the point it's a game to see how long it will go! The motor runs like a dream. The under carriage is as clean as a whistle. We quickly repaired the rust spots that you see on all the cars of this age. The interior is clean. From looking at CL and some other places it is very common to see these cars w/ 250+K miles on them.

The swap is a success. Everything is done and running fine. While I had it in the garage I also did all the other filters and fluids. Hopefully it's good for another 200K! ;)

I have under $500 in the tranny and starter (yes...starter...don't ask) and another $100 in filters and fluids. So for around $600 it's back on the road and I avoided car payments once again!
