    '70 F100 headers

    Threw a set of headers on the F100 today. They are block huggers; Sanderson Shorties.

    This is the first start up after install, letting the oils burn off:

    We used Sandersen shorties on the 429CJ we installed in a '68 F-100. They needed welded on a flange to increase the surface area for sealing against the head. Other than that they were ok.

    429 isn't an FE block. Not sure what the difference in headers would be. Hoping I don't need to weld anything...mainly because I can't weld.

    So I got the exhaust hooked up. With the exhaust going out the back, it's quiet until about 3k. Then it opens up and screams a bit.

    Now it's quiet enough to hear some valve noise. I'm currently running standard 10w-40. Guessing the noise is due to the old school flat cam? Can anyone recommend a certain oil for these flat tappet cam engines?

    If not, I'll probably just add some Lucas Oil stabilizer and hope it quiets down.

    Bonus: if the sound goes away, I'll upload a massive burnout video.

    you need to run a zinc additive all the time...after you confirm you have no internal damage adn the valvetrain is adjusted correctly

    Can you link me what to buy? Never ran anything but conventional before in older engines.

    x2... its pricey (about $75 case) but brad penn oil is the only way to go on stuff like this. i use the 10w30 in all my old hot rods. there is no other stuff on the market as good as this product. in a pinch valvoline vr1 is ok as it has added zinc. i also know some guys who use diesel oil too but ive always been skeptical of that - just doesnt seem right to me.

    I specifically asked the guy that built my engine (Rick Hawver) about using diesel oil, and he said it's just fine, won't hurt anything.

    I use shell rotella in my race engine 15/40 . Cheap and it works

    I heard that Rotella cut back in the zinc in their oil. Any truth to that?
