New 5.0 w/ noisy rear and 6 speed

My bro-in-law bought a new 5.0/6sp a month ago. He's complained about a "clunk" in the driveline since he's got it.

We put it on the rack....in gear. Moving one wheel, holding the other still, and holding the driveshaft....there was a terrible clunk in the diff. Seems like the lash was set at about 1/4"! Of course that can't be true but it just seemed really sloppy. Then by holding both wheels and moving the driveshaft there was a noise in the diff and the trans. Whatever we did there seemed to be excess noise in the trans and diff. Not grinding, just excess play and slop. When driving it, pulling out in first, creeping along slowly or in second creeping along you can hear it.

Went back to the stealer this week. Went to get it today, they said everything checked out "ok" and the noise was the result of the "type of car" that it is. Has anyone else experienced this type of noises?

I don't think he's even made the first payment, it has about 2500 miles on it already (had 12 when he got it) and he is pissed!!

My new 14 that has maybe 300 miles and I haven't made the first payment on, makes a clunk when stopped and I push the clutch in to put it in gear.
Much noticeable than any other stick I've had before.

My 2011 stick car made a lot of noises. Nothing ever broke. Even my new one makes some noise every once in a while.

Only noise my 2014 makes is a whine in 5th and 6th gear, sounds like gears to me. Taking it in next week. Pinion bearings are a common problem in these new 5.0 cars, from what I've read on forums.

Never have had any noises from mine other than the racket from wheel hop on hard 1-2 shifts.

I've heard a lot of other complaints about the drive shaft too.

If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it's marketed right, you'll buy it. But if it's real, you'll feel it. IG: @donuttrump

But when we held the d/s and rocked the wheels back and forth the noise was clearly in the diff. Not sure how a one piece d/s would help that.

They all clunk and make some noise, some notice it, some don't, some cars are worse than others. Also, S197's are notorious for gear whine in the 8.8, can't tell you how many bone stock cars I have been in with a customer that had very noticeable gear whine. As far as the rocking back and forth test, that is totally normal to hear the noises you did. Obviously without hearing everything my self I can say if his issues are excessive or not, but an aluminum driveshaft will definitely help.
