I can't answer your oil question. I've only done 1 oil change so far at 5000 miles.

I just received a recall notice regarding something emission related. I didn't read into it yet to see what exactly they want to do

I received that piece of mail too and would like to know what it is. From the wording my guess is that they want to choke the truck down even more. Said something about an adjustment in the emissions to meet the epa standards. That to mean sounds like "We need to make your truck cleaner".

That's what I was worried about. I may just disregard the recall since I have a pile of parts to put on the truck soon.

I am a bit disappointed. Over the weekend I learned that you can't brake boost these trucks. When I tried it acts like it cuts fuel even if the traction control is turned off. So much for messing with ricers at the lights in stock form.

Stay away from that 6.4 Scottie. They have problems that ate more costly to repair than the 6.0 does. The high pressure fuel pumps fail, causing metal to get into the injectors. Wipes out the injectors. If you catch it soon enough, you won't wipe the pistons out. Best case scenario is the HPFP, 8 injectors and rocker arms...always replace those because they are known to fail. That's a $8063.67 repair. That's having a very good friend in the dealership and getting parts cheaper. If you blow the pistons from over fueling (happens with injector compensation), you're looking at $16-18,000 for a crate engine.

The 6.4 is common rail and has a high pressure fuel pump whereas the 6.0 is oil pressure fired and has a high pressure oil pump.

I think if someone told me it was gonna cost me $8,000 to $18,000 to fix my car or truck i would tell them to just keep the phucking thing. That is preposterous.

That's what most people do unless it's a company truck. Then the replacement is a hell of a lot more. Just had that work done on a 6.4 last week. Luckily it was only injector 3 and 6 throwing compensation codes. Got it before they over fueled and melted some pistons.

The other failure part on the 6.4's is the belt tensioner. Its a cheap part but the job is a real bitch. You have to heat up the fan housing to flex it enough to get it off, then do the tensioner. Repeat process to assemble.

I would gladly take a 6.0 needing gaskets before buying a good running 6.4 any day of the week.

Nothing cheap about a diesel. Everything is twice the cost at least. Even tires...I just tossed down 20 Benjamin Franklin's on 6 tires!

Everyone has opinions on what year is best, which brand is best, blah blah blah.

I ran my 6.4 for years with 345 tune and it would blow 40s off without trying. Never had a single hiccup.

Don't be scared to get what you want, just know what to look for and find a clean one. No different than buying any other car.

That's correct on the opinion. But this is actually fact. Take a ride to ford dealerships that work on diesel. Not these dealers that are gas shops. You will find an abundance of 6.4's waiting for a new fuel system. The truck I'm talking about has 130,000 on it. Mind you this is the second time it happened. First time was warrantied at 63,000 miles.

I'm not saying what to buy. Just giving the actual facts. Think about why they only ran that engine 3 years. Research it. You'll see.

That's why I am going with the extended warranty. A $2000 fuel pump is insane.

I have an extended warranty on mine, and I'm almost certain it doesn't extend the powertrain warranty. I could be wrong

Every 6.4 guys ran in the oilfield (hotshotting) went through the same thing. There is a reason you see so many Cummins trucks in front of gooseneck trailers when you get out around the gas wells.

Some 6.7s has massive fuel system work done too, and at like 40k. Usually blamed on bad fuel. The in bed aux tanks seemed to cause huge issues with them.

    1320goat,
It depends on the extended warrenty but Ford offers them with powertrain.

    Mark,
I and going to say that any 6.7 fuel issues around the 40k more is the owner not changing filters since that's past when they should be changed the first time. Just got all mine off of ebay.

Make sure whatever filters you buy, they are ford filters. Should change them a hell of a lot sooner than that. I do mine every 3500-4000 miles.

I check for water every month and have not found any. Took the sample in a glass so I could look for crud too. I might be lucky because the fuel at the local sheetz seems clean. I refuse to fill up at any mom and pop station.

What fuel additive do you guys run?

Doesn't really matter where you fuel up at. Diesel is basically diesel. Sheets uses some different blends though.
The only additive I use in mine is either 20 gallons of ATF when I'm empty. As in with my 40 gallon tank, I'll dump in 20 gallons dies and 20 gallons used transmission fluid. Or if I don't have any of that I'll just dump in 10 or so gallons of 15-40 engine oil. New or filtered used.

When I do an oil change, I'll drain the oil and dump it right in my tank. That's 3 gallons of free fuel! Haha. Naturally the not trans fluid I use the more black smoke it makes. Gotta be gentle on the skinny pedal so it don't fog an intersection.
