I guess people feel that nothing will happen to them or it will happen to the other guy.

Do you all think a show like "Street Outlaws" fuel these type of gatherings?

FYI, I did my share of street racing in the days and there were close calls but no one ever got hurt. We were lucky!

I have been thinking about this. When did street racing go from fun to the point of where drivers don't let out of it even when they are out of control? I have ran my friends many many times and if things start to go wrong with a run we bail and try it again. I see no point in keeping the pedal mashed if the backend is kicking out and tires are smoking. Sure some times you need to drive out of an issue but that is different then going balls out with an... I cant get beat attitude.

I have been watching king of the streets and non-prep races that are held on tracks. Most of these guys are off their rockers. The winner of one event came out and said that the only reason he won was because he didn't care if he wrecked and that's what it took. Both cars where out of control if you ask me. I think the chute saved the one car by getting him straight and just when that happened the other guy went full throttle when sideways and some how the car came around. I say more luck then driving skills. I guess paying guys to drive is way different then owning the car and driving it yourself.

Ruthless, agreed--I see so many drivers at the track lose it completely because they have no idea how to control their car. I imagine that it happens in street races even more often because they have less traction. I watched several cars obliterate their tires way past the 60' and just stayed in it until the inevitable happened--they spin and sometimes hit the wall. Luckily, these guys are slow off the line and therefore don't hit the other car.

When I tell these stories, people say to me "Well yeah, but you have AWD so you don't have to worry about it LOL". This is not even remotely close to reality (for many reasons I won't get into)--I abandon many runs because I come out crooked and can't gather it up before shifting, etc. It has nothing to do with RWD, FWD, AWD or anything of the sort. It has to do with common sense and knowing when you can keep pushing and more importantly, when it's dangerous and need to abandon the run.

I bring this up because when I'm at the track, I feel I'm responsible for myself and my vehicle, but I feel an equal obligation to the driver lined up next to me. It could be just them, or maybe they have family and friends that I'm responsible to ensure my vehicle does not bring any harm to them.

Sometimes I just watch people launch and stay in it, acting like fools, and I just cringe--show some responsibility for yourself and your fellow driver. You want to endanger yourself, by yourself, have at it. But show some god damn common sense when someone is lined up beside you.

Such a sad story. I hate seeing things like this, as these are avoidable tragedies.

    ERR0RMACR0,
I couldn't have said it better.

I hope we have more level headed kids out there because we all know street racing will never go away and I am sure we have all done it at one point. The thing is how fast these new cars are without the amount of work that we use to put into them. With a big credit card you can build a 1000hp 5.0 mustang with hand tools. It just blows my mind some times and I just hope these owners take the time to get to know how to handle their cars before going all out. I am not going to lie. It took me a while before I turned my car up to where it was tuned on the dyno. I took a bunch of crap for it to but those guys didn't know I was running 10.5 turned way down so I didn't crap my pants trying to learn the car. lol

Its always magic when all four go up in smoke.

Any time I blow the tires off the DSM on a launch I know that I am going to totally screw up the shift anyhow by missing all together, or short shifting the crap out of it (Man-trans problems), so the pass is a loss anyhow, ET wise, so I generally take the 1-2 shift easy and then run it out the back door simply for the data log.

Staying "in it to win it" like that is just crazy.

A 900hp DSM has to launch at 7k.... Occasionally turns a 130 lb transmission into many, much smaller pieces.
