I'm always shocked when I see videos like this. I just cannot imagine having 50-60 people crowded around a public road, spraying down VHT, and racing--seems insane.

Very sad for the victims and their families and friends.
I don't know why people race in places like that - or why people put themselves in harm's way by standing so close.

Crazy. Looks like 28" bias ply rears and radials up front. Bad combination for control.
Aside from that, agree stupid to race on the street like that. Definitely don't understand why people feel safe standing that close to the race. I guess rally fans do it all the time.

Agreed--I would never stand where these people stand during these races. Everyone involved have responsibility, but seriously, standing that close is like asking to die or be seriously injured.
Rally race spectators must be dumb or drunk.........why anyone would stand where some of these ppl do is beyond me.

That's the other one I'm always like "WTF is wrong with these people"
I feel terrible for the lost and injured, but not surprised something like this happened. Another one I think will happen soon is a serious accident at one of these 1/2-1 mile events on unprepped surface, as well as a collision with another car at TX2K. It's going to happen, I just hope no one is hurt or killed in the process.
If I remember correctly, there was a GT-R that crashed last year at TX2K, at a VERY high rate of speed.

This is why I like the FLDs, all the fun with ambulances and staff on hand in case something goes wrong.

Exactly.
I think all of us have played around on the street at some point in our cars (we were all young), but the risk is too high. I suppose we are lucky to have events like the FLD's and a track like PRP within reasonable driving distance. If we didn't have those resources, who knows, we might be a lot more tempted to take it to the street.
You also have shows like Street Outlaws (which is an OK show, the constant censoring of the swearing just gets annoying to me watching it though), that glamorize street racing too, which makes it seem more exciting to some people.
I see why the NHRA sent out the letters to those guys, but I also see that it was a waste of time.

At least in Street Outlaws there aren't 300 people 3 feet to the side of the street...

yep. should never run a standard sized radial up front with a bias rear. The sway is terrible.

This is the biggest bullshit answer in this thread. Everybody knows street outlaws is 100% fake. The roads are all permitted. The letter was all bullshit too. I mean, it is a real letter from the ****tard's at NHRA, but they know its bullshit. NHRA basically wants their name on the show because they know the business is basically flushed down the toilet. That was their last ditch effort to salvage it.
The show does not glamorize street racing one bit. Some people take it that way. That's their fault.

Look at actual NHRA events. You can almost hear the crickets. Stands are empty.

Glamorize: : to make (something) seem exciting and attractive.
We all know the show is bs and the roads are permitted, but to say it doesn't make street racing seem exciting and attractive would be a pretty bold statement. It would also make for a short lived TV show.
Some Americans believe that the WWE is real, that our government really cares about the people, and that Oswald killed JFK, so I wouldn't say that it is beyond reason to say that some simpleton wouldn't try to replicate the lifestyle portrayed in the show.
I also agree with you. The only reason the nhra truly sent out those letters was to remain relevant.

I love when people crash at MustangWeek at Myrtle though.....
can't say have been guilty as a spectator as we used to line the streets at crafton week after week there. stupid yes but sure we have all done dumber things too. it is unfortunate turn of events but many people are killed from drunks yet they don't make the news headlines like street race does. although in Compton they need to find a more secluded area as that street has more prep than most tracks lol.
That is very sad to see. My heart goes out to the families of all that were involved. You just never know what's going to happen at an event like this. people forget that it doesn't take a monster hp car to cause something like this and they put their guard down.
