How has TPG been during the process? There's a lot of nice, fast stuff that has come out of there, but I have also seen equally bad. Just curious as to your experience so far.

The frozen wrist pin had no signs really. Before the engine was rebuilt it was making somewhere in the neighborhood of 600-650whp. The tolerances in the factory engine are just so damn tight--it's well engineered, but once you start going outside of factory power levels, those tight tolerances turn from good to bad.

The engine was being rebuilt as a precaution, but found two frozen wrist pins on cylinders 4 and 6 during the teardown. Many guys run the factory engine and many other components way further into higher HP than I do. Some of them get away with it, while others have suffered catastrophic failures. My build is actually kind of overkill for my power level--I just hate worrying about things, so I build it for Armageddon that way it doesn't break a sweat at the power level I'm at. Plus I drive the piss out of my cars lol

Ahh..yes i didn't pickup that the engine was rebuilt first.

So since the biggest part of going fast is dollars - i have to ask:

So how much does it cost to get a GTR engine pulled, rebuilt, and reinstalled these days?

Did they do any head work aside from the camshafts?

If so, I will guess 14k?

Wow those engine blocks have some meat to them. I can't wait to see it all back together and making some runs.

Assuming your block and crankshaft are good, a no heads engine rebuild runs between 8-10k. Heads adds 4-6k. That's all in with R&R. Great guess--you're pretty much spot on for a rebuild with head work.

My car is currently running factory heads and cams. That's the next phase for me, I'm really considering getting it done sooner than later, but I'd like to enjoy the car for a bit. If the weather is looking nasty for a couple of weeks, I may pull the trigger though--why can't I just leave shit alone lol.

thanks for sharing...people tend to never share how much things cost or what they have in a rebuild/build....like it's taboo or something.

They were pretty much top notch with everything. Their role in the build was quite limited, but their work has definitely inspired confidence. I wouldn't hesitate to take my car back there.

GT-R tax + Labor is mainly what drives up the costs on engine and trans rebuilds.

Some more info on my car:

In stock form, it ran a best of 10.79 @ 127 (this is still currently the world's fastest and quickest stock GT-R run). Factory boost is 13psi.

Adding a midpipe and tune to the car, it ran a 10.59 @ 129. Boost was increased to 18psi (it bleeds off to around 14psi or so at redline) on 93 octane.

Adding downpipes, intakes, 1000cc injectors, drop in pumps, and tuned on e85, it ran a 10.19 @ 134.

Last year, on the build mentioned above, it went 9.52 @ 149. I've run it on pump gas, but it wasn't really optimized, it goes high 9s in the low 140s.

DA for these runs ranged from 900-1400+.

The best available built manual trans for a dsm (PPG dogbox) runs about 7500.

Gtr trans builds get up into the mid 20's...

Thats a HUGE price difference. I understand the technology is nowhere near the same, but 300%

I guess when the car costs 100k+ just to get in the door, that is to be expected, but damn.

The 3.8 is a nightmare of parts held together with silicone.

I would just get the work done while its apart. That's what I did and how the fox body engine got so out of control. Everything seems to snowball and a large part of the rebuild cost is labor with engine builds.

I'm in the middle of the same thing now, thats why i just decided to put the biggest, baddest trans available in my car now instead of later.
