    EM's GT-R Refresh

    Hey, guys,

I'm really liking the local forum and thought I would put together a thread for my car. It's currently receiving a round of upgrades for the transmission, and will be back in my hands next week if all goes to plan. Before that, I'll list my build out before the most recent round of upgrades:

    Factory block 3.8 (9:1 compression)
Carillo Pro H-Beam Rods with Carr Bolts
    CP Pistons
    GT1R Harmonic Damper
Ultimate Street Manifold (USM) Turbos with Forged Actuators
Custom Ported Upper and Lower Manifold
    SBD 3" Intakes
    GFB Adjustable Blow-Off Valves
    Custom Front Mount Intercooler
    SBD Catless Downpipes
Custom Catless Midpipe with integrated 3 1/2" electronically controlled dump
    Fore Innovations Fuel Controller
Fore Innovations Triple Pump Hangar (Triple Pump for future upgrade, currently only using two)
    Twin Walbro 465 Pumps
    ID2000cc Injectors
    Flex Fuel Kit
    Speed Density Conversion
    EcuTek Tuning Software
    7 Plate Clutch Upgrade

That was the build from last year. I encountered some problems though--basically, the car made more power than we were planning for and as a result, my transmission had a difficult time managing the power. First, there was the issue of potentially blowing apart 1st gear or the output shaft. Second, the clutches weren't able to fully handle the power, so lots of slipping occurred throughout pulls. The build was finished in late April, and we really didn't get everything dialed in on e85 for maximum power until early summer, so the transmission issue wasn't fully found until then. With that, I decided to run as best I could and wait to re-pull the transmission this winter.

The transmission was sent back out for another round of upgrades after an inevitable 1st gear failure during a launch. The upgrades are:
Billet PPG 1st Gear and Output Shaft
Billet Clutch Baskets - A (even gears) and B (odd gears)
    9 Plate Clutch Upgrade
FWD Unit Modified and Converted to a Zero Pre-Load Unit (this basically allows me to electronically switch the car to RWD whenever I would like)

The transmission made it's way back to the car today and initial testing is promising. The car has been turned down for clutch break-in, but I'm optimistic that no more slipping will occur. I should have the car back next week sometime, so it can sit in my garage and wait for this damn snow to melt LOL. Below are some pics of the build and parts.

I'll also be changing the look of the car this year--I've had the black and bronze wheel combo for a couple of years now and would like something new. Still not 100% decided, but I'll post up some pics once I pick a new color for the car and wheels.

You know, for the longest time I never understood the mystique of the GTR. A buddy of mine was practically nutting over it for almost 2 years before it came out. After seeing the GTR threads, builds and videos here I understand the allure completely now.

The build is awesome and love the teardown pics!

Can't wait to see that beast on the road. Those cars are really something in stock form, and yours seems to be several big steps beyond that!
2014 GT Premium - Sterling Gray Metallic - MT82 - Track Pack - Glass Roof - Recaro seats - Spoiler delete
12.76 @ 114.04 bone stock. Koni yellow coil-overs, BMR watts, LCA and LCA relo brackets, Borla S-type axle back.

1966 Coupe - 331 stroker - Bullet custom roller cam - cam and motor installed and dyno tuned by Rodeheavers Hot Rod - Astro A5 - McLeod RXT - 486 to the wheels - more fun than my little tires can handle

1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - currently NOT on jackstands

I hope you remember where all those parts go!

Looks good, I can't wait to see it running after this round of mods.

How do you have the gopro mounted on the front?

Thanks a lot, guys! On the Go-Pro question, I'm using the suction cup mount and my front bumper has a flat surface below the grill area where it attaches nicely. We're already planning the next phase of upgrades which will be a heads, cam, and overall valve train upgrade. For now, I'm just excited to get back to the track and see what I can do with better holding clutches!

It's been dropped twice now--the first time at Weapon's Grade Performance, the second time by TPG. On difficulty, I've seen the process and with a well equipped shop and lift, I'd say it's fairly easy for them.

    Who is rebuilding the engine?

How much power was it making?

Could you hear the frozen wrist pin making noise?

Sorry, my post may not have been clear on this--the engine was already rebuilt. The engine rebuild was handled by Weapon's Grade Performance in Wallingford, CT. The frozen wrist pin had no signs really. Before the engine was rebuilt it was making somewhere in the neighborhood of 600-650whp. The tolerances in the factory engine are just so damn tight--it's well engineered, but once you start going outside of factory power levels, those tight tolerances turn from good to bad.

The engine was being rebuilt as a precaution, but found two frozen wrist pins on cylinders 4 and 6 during the teardown. Many guys run the factory engine and many other components way further into higher HP than I do. Some of them get away with it, while others have suffered catastrophic failures. My build is actually kind of overkill for my power level--I just hate worrying about things, so I build it for Armageddon that way it doesn't break a sweat at the power level I'm at. Plus I drive the piss out of my cars lol
