Fundamentally, the less restrictive the muffler on a turbo car, the more neutral it will sound. Dynomax Ultra Flow and Borla XR1 are both decent. I'm putting mine back together now with a short race bullet, screw the exhaust, lol.
Don't really want it to sound like a v8 necessarily, just not terrible. Lol.
This motor produces a really loud raspy note in high rpm and a lot of straight through mufflers make it even worse. Sounds like a fart can Honda.

Ultra flows, xr-1, and borla stingers are on my list of possibilities. I wish the xr-1 weren't so damn expensive though.
Pypes m-80s are on my list for a cheaper possibility.

For reference, this is a turbo v6 with a resonator and (what I assume to be) borla stingers.
I think it sounds good until he lets off, then is super raspy.
Not sure if xr1 are a little quieter/deeper.

This is driving, where it doesn't sound as bad IMO.

Update on my muffler search.

Emailed borla. They told me that the xr1 mufflers have a deeper tone and aren't as loud as the stingers.
I want to buy a set of these, but they only come in center in/center out configuration, which talking with Tim, are a pain in the ass to get to fit right on a new edge.

So now I'm looking at the borla pro xs.
These are seemingly slightly quieter, but not as deep of a tone.

As far as borla informed me, they all flow similarly, but in regards to loudness, pro xs < xr1 < stingers < ataks.

This is a 3.8 with pro xs, doesn't say what the rest of the exhaust setup is. Actually sounds pretty good IMO though. Not as raspy as stingers.

If I decide to go with xs over xr1, the xs are cheaper at least lolol

That owner is a friend of mine, and I was there for that dyno. Let me know if you have any questions for him. He still owns that car.

I met someone that knew him at Keystone test n tune one time. Guy saw my car and said he had a friend with a turbo v6.

Ask him if those mufflers are borla stingers for me lol

Response:
Regular borla before there were different types I believe. Also has an 18" Vibrant resonator and no cats.

Also said the resonator was key to eliminating rasp.

Hmmm okay.
I'm thinking I may try the borla pro xs.
Just hate to spend $200 on mufflers that may or may not sound awful lol

Ask him if they're round or an oval case if you don't mind.
The round ones are probably stingers. Oval are probably the xs or the touring catback

Oval, bought in 07 or so. He wasn't sure if they even still made that exact style.

Not sure either. If it was a catback, probably was this or something similar.
http://www.americanmuscle.com/borla-...ck-9904gt.html

I can't find what mufflers are in that kit.
Thanks though.

I'm going to talk to Tim and order either the xr1 or xs here soon I think. My catback is currently all welded together lol. Hodge podge of flowmaster mufflers, dynomax tailpipes, and some tips he ordered me.

Ended up buying two of these. Hopefully they sound okay.

Got a set of ported heads in the mail the other day. No pics though, I actually didn't feel like unwrapping all the damn saran wrap the guy wrapped them in lol

Sup all. Update again.

So I got those borla Pro XS mufflers.....and they're really, really, quiet. To the point that I ordered different ones already lol. They have a good tone to them, but basically sound like a stock v6 with mufflers. Super quiet. As Bob told me "he could hear my transmission over my exhaust" lol.

Here are a couple go pro vids from KRP street car night a few weeks ago. Most of my passes were junk, but still fun to get out there and bang gears. The new G-Force trans feels great.

these are in 1080p if you want the full effect lol.

So next on my to do list, is changing my intake setup. I've had this Windstar setup forever. For those that don't know, the intake off of a 96-98 year ford windstar minivan 3.8, fits on the mustang (with some minor modifications), and flows better than the factory manifold. It is also plastic for less heat soak (yay!).
I have been fighting a poor idle on this car ever since the turbo setup, and have gone over a bunch of things to try to alleviate it. This was another step.
To get the windstar upper to fit under the stock hood on a mustang requires shaving the IAC port and running a remote mount IAC valve. Now that I have a cowl hood, I have enough clearance to run a factory style setup and get rid of the remote IAC.
Decided to go with a BBK 65 mm throttle body, I believe the factory ford 3.8 one is 58mm. This leads to another issue - the IAC port on the TB is about 1/4" lower than the IAC port on the intake.
This calls for an adapter plate.
My dad ended up messing around with it for awhile and made this - not the prettiest but it seemingly works

this is the back side that goes to the intake

new intake and gaskets

intake on the car

Another issue, on my old setup, the throttle body had an extended linkage arm to account for the throttle cable.
you can see that here, above the alternator almost

so this require making a new throttle cable bracket.
this is the coil pack bracket I already had, it attaches to the side of the intake. The throttle cable used to mount to this.

Ended up making a Z bracket to mount the throttle cable to.

Once I mounted that and tested it out, I discovered I was bending the bracket when hitting the throttle. So, reinforcement plate was made.

Gave everything a couple coats of black paint.

all together. Ugly, but it works.

ta-da

Another update.

Another set of mufflers. This time borla XR1 -these are their "race" mufflers. Still not terribly loud but I think they sound pretty decent.

This is idle - https://youtu.be/2DlP6woKshE

And some free revs.

Also had Rodeheaver's mess with my tune a bit from this new intake. Car idles a bit better now which I'm happy with.

Unfortunately probably not. I am moving to South Carolina very soon.

I made a trip to Supercoupes Unlimited today to drop off all my motor parts.
Getting a new bullet this winter.
Built 4.2 stroker. Wiseco forged Pistons, 8.8:1 compression, scat H beam rods, factory Ford 4.2 truck crank, block drilled and tapped for 1/2" main ARP hardware. The whole shebang.
Going to turn it up and let it eat and see what she makes on pump 93. Shooting for 550+

Sounds like a great motor you're building. Congrats on the move - where in SC? At least you won't need a winter car...
